"We Care!" A Pearl Cove Library Community Event

We Care! – NSW Carers Week Living Library

A Pearl Cove Library Community Event

Where and When:
Date 13th October, 2020 @7PM – Pearl Cove Library, Option 2 Room
Refreshments provided. Accessible event for people with all types of abilities.

What:
This month, Pearl Cove Library will have the honor of hosting Human Living Libraries for the event “We Care! – NSW Carers Week Living Library.” Human Living Libraries are a free community resource that educate the public on marginalised populations.

The Human Living Library has a collection of people who offer their expertise in various areas of the human experience. These people are called “books” at the Human Living Library. The purpose of people “checking out” the “books” at the Human Living Library is to expand knowledge on these subjects.

This year, as part of Pearl Cove Library's Human Living Library Event, we will be honoring and  hosting NSW Carers. This is a NSW Carers Week event. Pearl Cove Library is honored to host a variety of carers with varying experiences they will share with the community.
 Why:
This event provides the opportunity for attendees to meet with these carers on an individual basis. Attendees will be able to ask questions and learn about what they do. The aim of this is to lead communities into being a more educated, empathetic and understanding society through the power of stories.
 Who:
The following carers will be participating in this rare event:
  1. A single mother and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) carer who cares for her physically disabled toddler aged-son.
  2. An unemployed person who provides 24 hour around the clock care for her parent that suffers from a terminal illness.
  3. A non-profit worker that works with carers in the community
  4. Dianne Brooks, an indigenous carer who looks after her elderly parent

Carers are an important group that give their time and energy to caring for loved ones. These loved ones in which hey care for can have physical and mental disabilities, chronic or temporary disease and challenges with older age.
How:
It should be noted that this service is free and is provided in conjunction with the Human Living LibraryAustralia non-profit organization.

Other groups involved in the event are the Pearl Cove Council Event Unit, the Department of Families and Community services and the Pearl Cove Neighborhood Centre.

The "weaker" sex has never been stronger, but the road to gender equality and acceptance still has some distance to travel.

Join us on that journey when this year, on International Women's Day, Pearl Cove Library invites you to be a part of our first  Human Living Library event  to celebrate women’s political, social and personal accomplishments, but also to raise awareness of the prejudices and discrimination they face

Join us and "borrow" a "human book". Don't miss the opportunity to meet some fascinating and diverse people, ask them questions and hear their stories in the cosy, casual atmosphere of Pearl Cove Room. Our "human books" list includes, among others, Katherine Cummings librarian, award-winning author and activist for transgender people’s rights in Australia - and Professor Ngiare Brown - one of the first Aboriginal doctors in Australia.

"Are you wondering who lives in your neighborhood?"

You are living in the beautiful area, Pearl Cove.

You can meet your neighbors through books.
You can read and respond to the conversation.

What is a human library?
Books are people in Human living libraries. These libraries have the same system as like normal libraries where readers borrow books and readers get things that they want to from books except that readers can’t take them home and reading time is limited. This “reading” happens in a dialogue with a Human book.

Our books are interesting.

Many Stories, One Australia

 Celebration of Harmony Day 2020

Harmony Day is a day for all Australians to celebrate our cultural diversity, take a stand against racism, share the values of Australian democracy and promote community harmony.
This year, we will celebrate Harmony Day in a brand-new way: Human Living Library. In this event, the book you read would be a human book. A human book is a person that volunteered to represent a stigmatized group in the community and based on their personal experiences can answer questions from readers to help challenge what is being said/told/understood about a given topic.
Come and have an open dialogue with diverse people from a whole range of backgrounds. Our “books” include an Indigenous artist, a refugee from Syria, a Chinese single mother and an Anti-racism activist.

LOCKED OUT !

Join us at Pearl Cove Library for a special Human Library event on International Prison Justice day!

What is International Prison Justice Day?

International Prison Justice day marks the anniversary of Eddie Nalon's death after the emergency call button in his solitary confinement cell failed to work. Later, investigation revealed that the buttons in that area of the prison had been deactivated by guards. The year following his death, the buttons had still not been fixed and the other prisoners held a protest, refusing to work or eat. Soon, a second man died of a heart attack when the buttons failed. What started as an inside protest eventually turned into an international day of solidarity for the unfairness that incarcerated people receive.

What is a Human Library?

A human library is just like a regular library, except every story you borrow is true and told by someone who has lived through it. The books you borrow will be made of flesh and bone instead of paper. It is a great opportunity to hear the voices of people you may not otherwise got to meet, and break down any prejudices or wrong beliefs you may have.

This International Prisoner Justice Day, Pearl Cove wants to invite you to hear the stories not only of past prisoners, but also of their families and the people that help them adjust to life once they are released. It is important to remember that the challenges faced by people in prison don't end the second they can return home. This is largely due to social prejudice and how quickly the world can change over only a few years meaning it takes time to adjust to regular life again.

The event will be held on the 10th of August from 4pm to 6:30pm inside the Pearl Cove Public Library.
There is a $10 entry fee and bookings can be made either on the Pearl Cove Council event page, or directly to the library by e-mailing us at ourlibrary@pearlcovecouncil.nsw.gov.au.

Pearl Cove Library is proud to announce that we have created this event in partnership with Justice Action. More about this organisation and what they do can be found on their website here: https://www.justiceaction.org.au/

The Right to Live, the Right to Die - Discussions on Euthanasia and Assisted Death

The Right to Live, the Right to Die

Discussions on Euthanasia and Assisted Death

Euthanasia is a charged subject. Many people have strong opinions on the topic, but there can be little in the way of facts, and it remains a taboo subject.

Join us at Pearl Cove Library this NSW Seniors Festival Week for a frank discussion on euthanasia as we host our inaugural Human Living Libraries event.

Founded in 2000, The Human Library Organization established the Living Library; an event where one can 'loan out' people, not books, for an in-depth discussion on topics that people may not have the opportunity to in their day-to-day lives.

This Seniors Festival, in association with Go Gentle Australia, Pearl Cove Library is hosting "The Right to Live, the Right to Die"; a Living Library event on the topic of euthanasia - otherwise known as assisted suicide. A difficult topic, our living 'books' are members of the community with experience or a unique viewpoint on the subject.

Our 'books' include;
  • an Indigenous community elder
  • a Medical Doctor with experience in assisted suicide
  • family members who have had loved ones request or receive euthanasia
  • and others

The Missing Link: Human Living Library

The Missing Link: Human living library

Pearl Cove Library, in conjunction with the The National Council of Single Mothers, will be hosting a Human Living Library event for the International Day of Families on the 15th of May.

Event Details:

Event: The Missing Link
Day: Friday 15th May 2020 - International Day of Families
Time: 4:00pm - 6:00pm
Venue: Pearl Cove Library - Pearl Room

With over 15% of Australia’s population being separated, divorced or widowed, the prevalence of fragmented families is a relevant and contemporary subject for our country and community.
This event aims to not only support those members who can directly relate to this issue, but to also raise awareness on the topic. We hope to help our community at large understand a perspective on life they are disconnected from by creating a safe, open forum to discuss.

Acknowledging and exploring the idea and issues of a ‘disconnected’ family will be a significant start in connecting Pearl Cove and achieving ‘An Inclusive and Connected Region’.

More information about our selection of Human Books can be found at: https://pearlcovelibrary.com.au/missing-link/

Bookings:

Advanced booking will be required to loan our human books and attend the event.
