A Human Library Event on albinism
Beyond Albinism is a Human Library event, where people can see
the difficulties faced and learn how it doesn’t make us all so different.
What is albinism?
Albinism is an inherited genetic condition. The condition reduces the amount of melanin pigment formed in the skin, hair, and/or eyes. Albinism can occur in all racial and ethnic groups throughout the world. Approximately one in 17,000 people in Australia have some type of albinism.
What is a Human Library?
A Human Living Library is where you can 'borrow' out people, as ‘books’, to
learn about their life and their experiences. You can also ask questions to
learn more about what they do and understand them more.
With this Human Library event, you will be given the chance to ‘borrow’ the five ‘books’.
Our participating ‘books’
Melissa Middleton, Indigenous Australian with albinism
Dr. Shari Parker, Specialist doctor
Brooke Misiak, has ocular albinism
Amanda Collins, Parent of children with albinism
Elizabeth Beales, President of Albinism Fellowship of
Australia
