To live in HARMONY

Harmony Day is celebrated  annually  in Australia on 21st March and it coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The main idea is that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights: Everyone Belongs.

Celebrate Harmony Day at Pearl Cove Library by joining our Human Living Library event - Building Bridges
At this event, you will be offered an opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue  with our "Living Books" from different cultures and backgrounds. Enhance your connection and respect for human diversity through interaction, and promote community harmony.

Human Living library  allows you to borrow real people as a book that they would not normally meet.
These volunteer books will share their  stories and  discuss openly with readers one on one conversation.
It helps dispel people's prejudices and break down stereotyping that occurs in our cities. It also contributes to reuniting our community leading to a worldwide movement to promote social change.

Our books include a local business owner who was born in Australia and currently supports the homeless, an Aboriginal person, Archie Rose, who is an activist & role model, a young Muslim woman who is a refugee from Syria, and a long-term unemployed person.

20 minutes each  "reading" session.
This is a free event and all  aged 16 and over are welcome !

Women’s Health: A Course in Action

Women's Health Week 2021

A Human Living Library Event

Women's Health: Why yours doesn't matter?

“For much of documented history, women have been excluded from medical and science knowledge production, so essentially we’ve ended up with a healthcare system, among other things in society, that has been made by men for men.” — Dr Kate Young

Women’s Health Week was created by Jean Hailes back in 2013, and is a nationwide campaign of events and online activities – all centred on improving women’s health and helping you to make healthier choices.

Holding an event for WHW would allow women to participate in dialogue created by women for women. We at Pearl Cove Library believe this is a social issue that would be nothing but informative and beneficial for the women of our community.

For more information click here.

How Human Living Libraries work?

Essentially, as a normal library and it’s average events would. Our library has sought out ‘living books’ – volunteers who could be considered specialists, in their own regards, to the Women's Health issue. You, the guest, will get to 'borrow' a 'book' and get the chance at an open dialogue. All in an attempt to encourage diversity, open-mindedness, and challenge prejudice.

Celebrate Us As Art

* INDIVIDUALLY CRAFTED *

Harmony Day is a day for all Australians to celebrate our cultural diversity and to learn from one another about what makes us who we are. So why not come celebrate Pearl Cove's diverse community in a new way with our Human Living Libraries event.

Our event, Individually Crafted, gives you the opportunity to sit down and have a conversation with someone who you wouldn't normally cross paths within your day-to-day life. All of our 'Living Books' are people who have volunteered themselves to represent a stigmatised group within a community. Our 10 volunteers have all found themselves dabbling at some point during their life in the creative arts in some way shape or form. Whether it be how they have overcome, or how they are learning to overcome the setbacks in the different fields of the creative industry. Or how they have embraced their culture and heritage in a way that lets them showcase their artform, whether physical or intangible, to the wider community.

Among our 10 volunteers are:
  •  Andy: an Indigenous Australian mural artist,
  • Cassandra: a Syrian photographer,
  • Jordan: a dancer with Sydney Dance Company
  • Terry: a music teacher of many years.

Listen and talk to them about how they have overcome difficulties and embraced and celebrated their creativity and artforms.

To see the full list of 'Living Books' and more details please go to our Eventbrite page.

Don't Judge A Book Bi Their Cover: Celebrate Bisexuality Day

Don't Judge A Book Bi Their Cover!

Pearl Cove Library and the Sydney Bi Plus Network (https://sydneybiplusnetwork.org/about-1) have partnered to celebrate bisexuality within our community by presenting the Human Living Library event "Don't Judge A Book Bi Their Cover: Celebrate Bisexuality Day"!

This event aims to help to remove the stigma that surrounds being bisexual in our society. Female bisexuals are often fetishized by the media, in film and on TV while male bisexuals face total erasure even within the LGBTQIA+ community.

The event will allow members of the bisexual community (our "books") to speak one-on-one with members of the Pearl Cove community who may have little to no experience with someone who is open with their bisexuality.

What is a Human Living Library?

The Human Living Library is the concept of borrowing people from a library who act as ‘books’ to those who loan them out. This is typically done as an event where the borrowers ask the human books questions about the topic they have been chosen to represent.

These events are designed to reduce prejudice, break down barriers, strengthen communities, and promote social change. For more information on Human Living Libraries in Australia, please see https://www.humanlibraryaus.org/about.

Say Hello to Some Good Bi's, Meet our Books!

Jessica Benson (She/Her): Jessica is a resident of Pearl Cove who has been openly bisexual for over 15 years and is happy to share her story.

Patrick Stratton (He/Him): Patrick is another local resident of Pearl Cove who has been openly bisexual for 4 years.

Amber Loomis (They/Them): Amber is the Sydney Bi+ Network President and has been active in the LGBTQI community for over 10 years.

Michael Inglis (He/Him): Michael is an openly bisexual Indigenous Australian who campaigns for LGBTQI rights with First Nations Rainbow (https://www.firstnationsrainbow.org.au/team).

The Right to Live, the Right to Die - Discussions on Euthanasia and Assisted Death

The Right to Live, the Right to Die

Discussions on Euthanasia and Assisted Death

Euthanasia is a charged subject. Many people have strong opinions on the topic, but there can be little in the way of facts, and it remains a taboo subject.

Join us at Pearl Cove Library this NSW Seniors Festival Week for a frank discussion on euthanasia as we host our inaugural Human Living Libraries event.

Founded in 2000, The Human Library Organization established the Living Library; an event where one can 'loan out' people, not books, for an in-depth discussion on topics that people may not have the opportunity to in their day-to-day lives.

This Seniors Festival, in association with Go Gentle Australia, Pearl Cove Library is hosting "The Right to Live, the Right to Die"; a Living Library event on the topic of euthanasia - otherwise known as assisted suicide. A difficult topic, our living 'books' are members of the community with experience or a unique viewpoint on the subject.

Our 'books' include;
  • an Indigenous community elder
  • a Medical Doctor with experience in assisted suicide
  • family members who have had loved ones request or receive euthanasia
  • and others
Where: Pearl Cove Public Library
When: 15th of February 2020, from 12:30pm
