In observance of the United Nations Human Rights Day, Pearl Cove Library will be hosting a Human Library event on drug reform polices, such as decriminalisation and legalisation,  and harm reduction strategies.

The Human Library event gives attendees the chance to ‘borrow’ one of five persons designated as a ‘book’, and ask them relevant questions. The ‘books’ will share their knowledge and opinions as advocates for drug reform policy, giving attendees the chance to learn about the benefits of drug decriminalisation and harm reduction practices, with the aim of reducing the stigma associated with drug users.

Who are the participating ‘books’?

  • Edward ‘Ted’ Wilkes, Nyungar man, Harm Reduction Australia (HRA) advocate, associate professor of Aboriginal Research Programs at the National Drug Research Institute (Curtin University).
  • Dr. Alex Wodak, addiction medicine specialist, president Australia Drug Law Reform Foundation, contributed to opening first Medically Supervised Injecting Centre.
  • X, drug user who has been through the criminal justice systems for drug related offences.
  • Y, drug user who has not been through criminal justice system.
  • Z, former/rehabilitated drug user who has experienced detox through government methadone clinic/addiction rehab centre.
