A Discussion DYING to Be Had

Pearl Cove Library is Hosting a Dying to Know Day Human Library Event

   Sunday August 8th 2021 2-6pm

Sourced from Sahara Funerals: http://www.saharafunerals.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/green-funerals.jpg

It's time to talk about death, dying, and how to deal with the grieving process.

Dying causes a lot of stress and costs a lot of money because we are often unprepared for it. Death is obviously a part of life but despite this it is a taboo and put off conversation.

By engaging in conversations with experts around death, alternative burial practices (which are cheaper and better for the environment), funeral wishes and what is to be done with property, early and explicitly the experiences around death and grieving are easier and less expensive. Allowing everyone to approach death with dignity.

Find out more about the work being done to inspire these conversations at https://www.thegroundswellproject.com/

But what is a human library event?

A human library is what it sounds like, a library collection not made of traditional materials but people: their lives, stories, and experiences.

Experts on a topic are 'books' available to be borrowed by readers for a thirty minute conversation.

More information about The Human Library is available here

Fast Facts About Cerebral Palsy

Around the world, 17 million people, including around 34,000 Australians, live with cerebral palsy or CP. Cerebral palsy is an umbrella term for a group of neurological disorders caused by damage to the brain.

People with CP have some form of lifelong physical disability which affects their muscle tone and motor skills to varying degrees.

No two people living with the condition have the same experience, so each person has a different story to tell! They may use a walking frame or a wheelchair, be unable to speak, and/or need assistance eating, dressing, and showering. Some may only have a limp. Like people with other conditions, those with CP don’t want to be defined only by their disability, although many are proud to identify as disabled.

11 books with lived experience of CP will be available for you to consult on Friday 9 October at our Living Libraries event which runs from 5 PM to 8:15 PM. Come join this fun and free conversation!

Feeling eco-friendly? Why not use public transport or come on foot? It's a 10-minute walk from Pearl Cove Central Library to Pearl Cove Train Station or a five-minute walk from the nearest bus stop.

LOCKED OUT !

Join us at Pearl Cove Library for a special Human Library event on International Prison Justice day!

What is International Prison Justice Day?

International Prison Justice day marks the anniversary of Eddie Nalon's death after the emergency call button in his solitary confinement cell failed to work. Later, investigation revealed that the buttons in that area of the prison had been deactivated by guards. The year following his death, the buttons had still not been fixed and the other prisoners held a protest, refusing to work or eat. Soon, a second man died of a heart attack when the buttons failed. What started as an inside protest eventually turned into an international day of solidarity for the unfairness that incarcerated people receive.

What is a Human Library?

A human library is just like a regular library, except every story you borrow is true and told by someone who has lived through it. The books you borrow will be made of flesh and bone instead of paper. It is a great opportunity to hear the voices of people you may not otherwise got to meet, and break down any prejudices or wrong beliefs you may have.

This International Prisoner Justice Day, Pearl Cove wants to invite you to hear the stories not only of past prisoners, but also of their families and the people that help them adjust to life once they are released. It is important to remember that the challenges faced by people in prison don't end the second they can return home. This is largely due to social prejudice and how quickly the world can change over only a few years meaning it takes time to adjust to regular life again.

The event will be held on the 10th of August from 4pm to 6:30pm inside the Pearl Cove Public Library.
There is a $10 entry fee and bookings can be made either on the Pearl Cove Council event page, or directly to the library by e-mailing us at ourlibrary@pearlcovecouncil.nsw.gov.au.

Pearl Cove Library is proud to announce that we have created this event in partnership with Justice Action. More about this organisation and what they do can be found on their website here: https://www.justiceaction.org.au/

Help Pearl Cove SPEAK OUT against abuse

For National Psychology Week, the Pearl Cove Library Service and Coveside Psychology Clinic have partnered to host a Human Living Library event: 'Speak Out Against Abuse.'

What is a Human Library?

Human Living Libraries provide a safe and conversational space where people can discuss topics that may be outside the scope of their everyday lives. In these libraries, people take on the role of speaking 'books' who act as sources of information, sharing their unique lived experiences and perspectives,

Please come join us on Sunday 17th November 2019 at Pearl Cove Library to hear from four living 'books' with expertise and experience regarding family conflict, elder abuse, the psychological effects of abuse, and the formal processes surrounding this issues.

General Information

Autism and Asperger's Syndrome share something in common, those suffering from either of the two disorders will have difficulties in social interactions, be likely to produce repetitive behaviours, and worst of all, and can last up to a life time. People suffering from either Autism or Asperger's often find themselves struggling with being belonged to with regular society. We believe that we need to develop methods in raising our awareness with these two disorders and the potential effects these disorders can impact the livelihoods on a person's life.

The Pearl Cove community has organised a special event, in cooperation with various non-for-profit organisations, to provide the opportunity for people to communicate with the individuals who are suffering from either Autism and Asperger's Syndrome disorders as means to better understand their own point of views of society and the effects these disorders are affecting them everyday. The event is called "Autism and Asperger's Awareness".

Inspired by the United Nation's World Autism Awareness Day event, this particular library event will play out as a 'Human Living Library', where people will 'role-play' as books, engaging with conversations with one another.

We have these particular people who are available to participate the event as 'living library books':

  • Terry Burke and Paul Miscallef - Co-Chairs of the Australian Autism Alliance
  • Katharine Annear - Chair of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network of Australia and New Zealand
  • Jac de Houting - Registered psychologist diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome
  • Tony Langdon - Volunteer firefighter diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome

If you have any questions or enquiries regarding the "Autism and Asperger's Awareness" event, please contact Patrick Enriquez via email at patrickenriquez@pearlcove.gov.au or call 0421 481 826.
