As part of NAIDOC Week 2021, Pearl Cove Library is running a Human Library event. National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week is a time for Australians to celebrate the culture and history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Earlier this year, the world was rocked by the murder of George Floyd. The Black Lives Matter movement that followed showed how far Australia has to go itself with improving the inequalities in Australia. NAIDOC Week is one time where we can learn more about the Aboriginal community.

The Stolen Generation is part of Australia's history of terrible treatment towards the Aboriginal people. This human library is an event where you can come and have conversations with stolen generation survivors and learn more about their experiences, as well at their experience of racism in Australia. For a long time there hasn't been enough education and light shed on this event. Come along to hear their stories as we try and change this.

What is a Human Library event?

The purpose of the human library is for people to engage in their differences through conversation so they can learn and become educated. At human library events people have volunteered to be the ‘books’ and the attendees who come can ‘borrow’ the books for a specified amount of time. During this time attendees can ask the book questions without judgement in a safe environment. Human library events aim to challenge stereotypes and prejudice and make communities more inclusive and culturally aware.

Come take part of NAIDOC Week 2020 at Pearl Cove Library! Throughout the week, you will have the chance to speak to one (or more) of our Human books about their experiences and learn more about the Indigenous Australian culture and what it means to be an Indigenous Australian. 

Background Information: 

NAIDOC Week is an event that takes place every year during July which aims to raise awareness of achievements made by Indigenous Australians. The theme for 2020 is 'Always was, Always will be.' This year, we have invited four 'Human Books' to be present during the week to those who wish to know about the experiences of Indigenous Australians.

*On Sunday the 8th of November, there will be a talk by two Indigenous Australians beginning at 1:30pm, Please make your way to the Pearl Room on the ground floor of Pearl cove library. Following the talks, the Human Books will be available. The Books will also be available for the rest of the week.

A Human Living Libraries Event as part of NAIDOC Week

Did you know the First Peoples have caretaken for the Australian continent for over 65,000 years? They also created structures that predate sites like the Egyptian pyramids and Stonehenge. Pearl Cove Library invites you to learn more about the rich history, culture and heritage of our country at our Human Living Library.

Time: 6pm - 9pm

What is a Human Living Library? An event in which people are the ‘books’ and library patrons can ‘borrow’ them, to learn more about their life circumstances. At its heart, the experience encourages engagement, exchange and empathy.

Ancient History will be an opportunity for you to listen and learn more about the experiences of our First Nations peoples. In celebration of NAIDOC Week, we will be hosting an evening with six Books and an exhibition of artworks by local Indigenous artists and students. Refreshments provided!

In celebration of NAIDOC Week 2019, a special Cultural event will be held at Pearl Cove Library.

Written In skin is a one of a kind event. A human living library is on offer to educate and inform attendees about the rich indigenous history of Scarification. This almost non-existent ritual is considered sacred and we ask that all attendees kindly submit their questions before the event so as to ensure they are appropriate and not unintentionally offensive or sensitive to answer.

A professor of Anthropology will be available to also answer any questions and will give an interesting perspective on how humans have used scarification, tattooing and other physical forms of illustration for centuries to identify and belong as part of a community.

A Tattoo artist will also bring fresh insight into the world of tattoo illustration and its evolution focusing on Gang affiliation Tattoos, Art, Religion and the Abstract.

Celebrating NAIDOC Week 2018 at Pearl Cove Library

On the 30 June 2018, We have been honoured to provide the biggest NAIDOC (NATIONAL ABORIGINES & ISLANDERS DAY OBSERVANCE COMMITTEE) week 2018 celebration in NSW. The celebration is part of The Australian Living History and Education Program.
