Dementia is often thought of as an older persons disease, but did you know that it can affect someone in their 30s?

There are an estimated 25000 people in Australia living with younger onset dementia, A term used to describe a diagnosis of dementia under the age of 65. Many of these people are still working, are raising dependent children, or are caring for an older relative. A diagnosis can be confronting, frightening and isolating.
We here at Pearl Cove library are striving to build a dementia friendly community and are holding a special event to coincide with Dementia Awareness Month this September.
Too Young to Forget is a human library event
Date: Saturday 21 September
Time: 9am-1.30pm
Place: Pearl Cove Library (Pearl Room)
Cost: Free
Booking: Through Eventbrite here
Limited places so bookings are essential
What is a human library? A human library is where people are the books who are on loan to readers to have a conversation. It's an opportunity to ask questions, to challenge stereotypes and break down prejudices. It's a chance to encourage an understanding and to ask the questions you've always wanted to ask.
Maybe you have a family member or friend who is diagnosed, or you have a local business and want to understand how you can help make a difference. Little things like the language you use and the way you interact, can have a positive impact in the life of someone living with younger onset dementia.
Come along and have a chat with someone who is living with, or whose parent has younger onset dementia. Ask questions of a representative of the Dementia Australia key worker program. We will have 6 books available for you to borrow including Kate Swaffer, author of "What the hell happened to my brain" who was diagnosed with dementia at the age of 49 and is a globally recognised advocate for people living with dementia. You can find more information about our books here
Be a part of a great event and join us in becoming more dementia aware and help us on the road to building a dementia friendly community.
