Stirring the CALDron - Pearl Cove Human Library Event

Stirring the CALDron - Let's talk about linguistic diversity

Image sourced from https://en.unesco.org/commemorations/motherlanguageday

To celebrate International Mother Language Day, Pearl Cove Library will be hosting a Human Living Library event. This is your chance to borrow human “books” to hear the voices of Pearl Cove and learn about their mother languages. 20% of Pearl Cove's residents were born outside of Australia, and 7% do not speak English as their first language. The top languages spoken in our community include Farsi, Arabic, and Mandarin. Pearl Cove is also a Refugee Welcome Zone for refugees from Iran and Syria. Human Libraries create a safe space to challenge ideas, and encourage unity amongst different social, cultural, and religious groups. Borrow a book for 20 minutes and discover how cultural and linguistic diversity can strengthen your business or institution and contribute to the development of the Pearl Cove Community.

You can find out more about International Mother Language Day at https://www.un.org/en/observances/mother-language-day

Discover Our Heritage & Our Future

Join Pearl Cove Library as we hold our community’s first ever
Human Library
where the books are alive and the stories are real.

On Saturday 21 May 2020, you can borrow books just for the morning, but this time the books are humans.  Following the practice of Denmark’s renowned Human Library, each one of the books at this event will be a living Pearl Cove community member who represents our multicultural heritage and our future.

We’ll have Living Books from our indigenous, refugee and migrant communities, as well as a Book whose great, great, great grandfather was among the original Pearl Cove founders. They'll tell stories of a community's struggles brought by racial, cultural, physical and religious difference to live a life of peace and equality in our beautiful town.

Our Human Library will take place over a delicious morning tea designed by our own Heritage Committee to reflect the diversity of our community. We’ll invite attendees to borrow the Living Books for open discussions in small groups.

This is a FREE event to unite and celebrate community so we can grow the future together.

Bookings are essential as this is a limited number event.

Breaking out: Escaping the prison of stereotypes.

Bookings to be made through Eventbrite.

To celebrate International Prison Justice Day, the Pearl Cove Library will host a Human Library event. This event will shine a light on those affected by the prison the system by allowing patrons to talk with those who have been incarcerated, those whose loved ones are incarcerated and those whose livelihoods are based within the prison system.

The Human Library® is, in the true sense of the word, a library of people. We host events where readers can borrow human beings serving as open books and have conversations they would not normally have access to. Every human book from our bookshelf, represent a group in our society that is often subjected to prejudice, stigmatization or discrimination because of their lifestyle, diagnosis, belief, disability, social status, ethnic origin etc.

Too Young to Forget

Dementia is often thought of as an older persons disease, but did you know that it can affect someone in their 30s?
Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay

There are an estimated 25000 people in Australia living with younger onset dementia, A term used to describe a diagnosis of dementia under the age of 65. Many of these people are still working, are raising dependent children, or are caring for an older relative. A diagnosis can be confronting, frightening and isolating.

We here at Pearl Cove library are striving to build a dementia friendly community and are holding a special event to coincide with Dementia Awareness Month this September.

Too Young to Forget is a human library event
Date: Saturday 21 September
Time: 9am-1.30pm
Place: Pearl Cove Library (Pearl Room)
Cost: Free
Booking: Through Eventbrite here
Limited places so bookings are essential

What is a human library? A human library is where people are the books who are on loan to readers to have a conversation. It's an opportunity to ask questions, to challenge stereotypes and break down prejudices. It's a chance to encourage an understanding and to ask the questions you've always wanted to ask.

Maybe you have a family member or friend who is diagnosed, or you have a local business and want to understand how you can help make a difference. Little things like the language you use and the way you interact, can have a positive impact in the life of someone living with younger onset dementia.

Come along and have a chat with someone who is living with, or whose parent has younger onset dementia. Ask questions of a representative of the Dementia Australia key worker program. We will have 6 books available for you to borrow including Kate Swaffer, author of "What the hell happened to my brain" who was diagnosed with dementia at the age of 49 and is a globally recognised advocate for people living with dementia. You can find more information about our books here

Be a part of a great event and join us in becoming more dementia aware and help us on the road to building a dementia friendly community.

Living Libraries Event - Recognition of Autism and Asperger's Syndrome

Event Details

Wednesday, 3rd April 2019

12:00 pm to 2:15 pm
Pearl Cove Library, Ground Library Floor
Wheelchair Accessibility Available

Photo by Terry Ballard (URL: https://www.flickr.com/photos/terryballard/34260243793)

General Information

Autism and Asperger's Syndrome share something in common, those suffering from either of the two disorders will have difficulties in social interactions, be likely to produce repetitive behaviours, and worst of all, and can last up to a life time. People suffering from either Autism or Asperger's often find themselves struggling with being belonged to with regular society. We believe that we need to develop methods in raising our awareness with these two disorders and the potential effects these disorders can impact the livelihoods on a person's life.

The Pearl Cove community has organised a special event, in cooperation with various non-for-profit organisations, to provide the opportunity for people to communicate with the individuals who are suffering from either Autism and Asperger's Syndrome disorders as means to better understand their own point of views of society and the effects these disorders are affecting them everyday. The event is called "Autism and Asperger's Awareness".

Inspired by the United Nation's World Autism Awareness Day event, this particular library event will play out as a 'Human Living Library', where people will 'role-play' as books, engaging with conversations with one another.

We have these particular people who are available to participate the event as 'living library books':

  • Terry Burke and Paul Miscallef - Co-Chairs of the Australian Autism Alliance
  • Katharine Annear - Chair of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network of Australia and New Zealand
  • Jac de Houting - Registered psychologist diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome
  • Tony Langdon - Volunteer firefighter diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome

If you have any questions or enquiries regarding the "Autism and Asperger's Awareness" event, please contact Patrick Enriquez via email at patrickenriquez@pearlcove.gov.au or call 0421 481 826.
