General Information

Autism and Asperger's Syndrome share something in common, those suffering from either of the two disorders will have difficulties in social interactions, be likely to produce repetitive behaviours, and worst of all, and can last up to a life time. People suffering from either Autism or Asperger's often find themselves struggling with being belonged to with regular society. We believe that we need to develop methods in raising our awareness with these two disorders and the potential effects these disorders can impact the livelihoods on a person's life.

The Pearl Cove community has organised a special event, in cooperation with various non-for-profit organisations, to provide the opportunity for people to communicate with the individuals who are suffering from either Autism and Asperger's Syndrome disorders as means to better understand their own point of views of society and the effects these disorders are affecting them everyday. The event is called "Autism and Asperger's Awareness".

Inspired by the United Nation's World Autism Awareness Day event, this particular library event will play out as a 'Human Living Library', where people will 'role-play' as books, engaging with conversations with one another.

We have these particular people who are available to participate the event as 'living library books':

  • Terry Burke and Paul Miscallef - Co-Chairs of the Australian Autism Alliance
  • Katharine Annear - Chair of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network of Australia and New Zealand
  • Jac de Houting - Registered psychologist diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome
  • Tony Langdon - Volunteer firefighter diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome
