Nuerodiversity Is My SuperPower!- Stronger Through Understanding

        -Stronger Through Understanding-

Don't miss this exciting opportunity to attend a Human
Living Library as a part of Neurodiversity week at
Pearl Cove Library!

What is neurodiversity?

In the 1990s, an Australian sociologist named Judy Singer, who was herself autistic, coined the term 'neurodiversity' to represent the many variations in brain differences. You may have heard the term 'On the spectrum' before. This refers to people who may have neurodiverse traits such as Autism, Aspergers, ADHD, Dyslexia and many others. Although society has viewed these as abnormal in the past, we now know, it's just a different way of thinking.

What is a Human Living Library?

It is a chance to sit with one our five neurodiverse "books" for up to 20 minutes and ask questions about what its like to live with Autism or Aspergers, ADHD or Dyslexia etc.  Discuss challenges, discrimination, realizations or positive directions they might have experienced in many aspects of their day-to-day life. They might make you rethink any misconceptions you may have had about neurodiversity. This is a chance to connect and learn in a way like no other!

Our Books:

  • Temple Grandin- Professor, Inventor, Author with autism
  • Steven Wiltshire- Artist with autism
  • Jack Clarke-Symes- University student with aspergers
  • Mikala Sedgwick- Gamilaraay mother whose son, Felix is autistic
  • Brooke Kimber- Teen from Marrickville High School with Dyslexia and ADHD

What is a Human Living Library?
A Living Library is a new, inclusive event where member of the public can interact and chat with "Human Book" - a collection of people willing to share their experiences on a topic. It promotes diverse thinking and helps people to overcome unconscious biases and break down prejudices. (For more info go to Human Library Australia)

More About the Event
Pearl Cove Library is inviting four individuals to talk about their experiences with ASD in a series of short one-on-one conversations. Books can be "borrowed" for up to 25 mins, during which time attendees are invited to listen to their stories and ask questions about the topic. Tea/coffee and a small selection of biscuits will be provided throughout the day.
Attendees are reminded to be respectful towards the Books, and to not raise their voice or act aggressively towards them. The Books are free to refuse to answer questions or terminate the conversation early if they feel uncomfortable.

General Information

Autism and Asperger's Syndrome share something in common, those suffering from either of the two disorders will have difficulties in social interactions, be likely to produce repetitive behaviours, and worst of all, and can last up to a life time. People suffering from either Autism or Asperger's often find themselves struggling with being belonged to with regular society. We believe that we need to develop methods in raising our awareness with these two disorders and the potential effects these disorders can impact the livelihoods on a person's life.

The Pearl Cove community has organised a special event, in cooperation with various non-for-profit organisations, to provide the opportunity for people to communicate with the individuals who are suffering from either Autism and Asperger's Syndrome disorders as means to better understand their own point of views of society and the effects these disorders are affecting them everyday. The event is called "Autism and Asperger's Awareness".

Inspired by the United Nation's World Autism Awareness Day event, this particular library event will play out as a 'Human Living Library', where people will 'role-play' as books, engaging with conversations with one another.

We have these particular people who are available to participate the event as 'living library books':

  • Terry Burke and Paul Miscallef - Co-Chairs of the Australian Autism Alliance
  • Katharine Annear - Chair of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network of Australia and New Zealand
  • Jac de Houting - Registered psychologist diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome
  • Tony Langdon - Volunteer firefighter diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome
