Interfaith, Interconnected, One Community

Welcome to Interfaithful, Pearl Cove Library's Human Library event for the promotion of Interfaith Harmony Week and broader understanding between faiths in the Pearl Cove area.

A Human Library event involves the presence of individuals who are referred to as 'Books' for the event, and are your opportunity to 'read' about their personal experiences and extensive knowledge on their area of expertise, in this case their religious knowledge. You will be able to book a 20 minute session during our single day event while time-slots remain available to speak to one of our books and have a conversation regarding faith, religion, and community involvement.

For this event we would like to especially make welcome any families new to the area, especially in conjunction with the council's goal to make Pearl Cove a safe and accepting place for our community members seeking refuge in Australia, as well as our established community members who feel they would like an opportunity to become better involved with new community initiatives.

“Meet our everyday heroes”

Pearl Cove Library is proud to present a Human Library Event.

What is a Human Library Event you may ask?

The Human Library is a worldwide movement in which the "books" are actually humans who have a really unique story to tell, about their life and experiences. They give you the opportunity to learn first hand, what they have to say, to connect with them and freely ask them any questions you may have. Do you want to know more? You can visit the Human Library page  https://humanlibrary.org/

“Meet our Everyday heroes”

The Human  Library Event: "Meet our Everyday heroes" is a  unique event that targets everyone that wants to understand how people with down Syndrome think, what they feel and how we should target their needs. In Australia, approximately 5% of people are born with Down Syndrome, which means that most of us will come across a person with this syndrome in our lives.

Getting to know them will make us understand and capable to support them. By meeting them you will understand how we underestimate their talents and their abilities in doing things. People with down syndrome, that grow up with love and support in their life, tend to be in most cases independent, with hobbies and a job.  These people dealing with prejudice and they fight every day with things that to us may seem ordinary. That is why I call them heroes. A lot of struggle, but with a lot of love to give. Meet our Everyday heroes then. The third of  December 2021 is the International Day of People with Disabilities. Pearl Cove Library gives you the opportunity to embrace them with a Human Library Event.

This event is ideal for school Children to Learn how to react to special people. Children at school in most cases may feel awkward when they are around different people. So this event's goal is to help children win their fear and prejudice around these people. children will have the opportunity to spend time and chat with the Human "books" to solve any questions. In addition, finger foods will be available, during the break and beverages.

 Our Books are:

Elli - a really sweet 15-year-old girl with Down Syndrome

John, Ellis Father and guardian

Tom - 25-year-old Tom with Down Syndrome does a lot of activities like swimming and is a quite independent and smart young man.

Soffie- Tom's Support worker, is working with him for a year and has a lot to say about the difficulties that Tom is facing in his everyday life.

James: James is an Aboriginal 27-year-old man, who lives in a care house. He will tell us about the support he receives from the state programs and the problems he is dealing

Mrs Mary Psycologist with experience in working with people with Down Syndrome.

How to join??

When and Where: This event takes place on the 3d of December at 11.00am in  Pearl Cove Library Courtyard.

What to expect: Meet our "books" when they will tell you their stories and be able to chat with them and ask any questions you may have.

BDSM = SSC
Get Your Kink On

Source (NSFW content warning)

Hey there, chances are you've heard of something called BDSM. Chances are you know that it stands for Bondage Domination Sadism and Masochism. But then there's also the chance that you have no idea what it is beyond those labels, let alone what SSC means, you may even have some misgivings about it all even though you barley have a clue on what it is. Whatever your story, we at Pearl Cove Library believe that everyone (within the legal age group where applicable) should have the chance to be educated on all the interesting things the world has to offer. For some of your own research, head over to Red Light Australia.

Human Living Library

A Human Living Library is an event that libraries hold to help members of their community educate others of the community on their way of life. In the past libraries have held events for the LGBTQAI+ community, for people living with anxiety, depression, PTSD, Autism and so much more. But this year, we at Pearl Cove wanted to do something a little less...conventional. For more information on Human Living Libraries and the history of the event, here's some further reading.

Our "Books"

For obvious reasons, our books would like to remain anonymous until you meet them. But we can tell you that we have a wide range of titles to choose from: a Dom, a Sub, a Switch (someone who easily falls into either of the previously mentioned roles) and even the owner of our local BDSM club, The Pearl. Some are even part of the Aboriginal Community as well as the LGBTQAI+ Community. All of them willing to give their stories and knowledge to those seeking it.

Information

Who: 4 Books (30 minute sessions with 10 minute breaks between)

When: Saturday, 24th July (International BDSM Day), 4:50 – 8 pm

Where: Pearl Cove Library Café

Fee: $10. Bookings are available here.

(For Mental Health Awareness Week 8-14th May 2021)

Human Living Library Event @ Pearl Cove Library

''I would say what others have said: It gets better. One day, you’ll find your tribe. You just have to trust that people are out there waiting to love you and celebrate you for who you are. In the meantime, the reality is you might have to be your own tribe. You might have to be your own best friend. That’s not something they’re going to teach you in school. So start the work of loving yourself.'' Wentworth Miller

A Home for Everyone

Photo by Birgit Loit on Unsplash

In Australia, we show a pretty strong affinity for the idea of home. We sing about wanting 'a home among the gum trees' or still calling 'Australia home', and we watch 'The Castle' and recite Dorothea Mackellar's 'My Country', claiming a bond, a share in the places we grew up, the land that formed us. But 'home' is not a thing that everyone gets to share in fully - and even those of use lucky enough to feel secure in our housed state cannot avoid the fact that our very environment is fragile, on the precipice of climate disaster. Join us at Pearl Cove Library's first Human Library event to hear the stories of people whose experiences may provide a new perspective and people who are doing the work to bring justice and positive change to Australia's relationship with the idea of home.

What are Human Libraries?

The human library concept was created to give people a way of connecting with people whose experiences might vary wildly from their own - each human book at a human library has genuine first-hand knowledge of the topics they discuss and are gracious enough to share with the public in conversations facilitated by a human library event. Visit https://humanlibrary.org/ for more information.

Where?

Pearl Cove Library main branch: corner of Seaview Street and Fig Avenue, Pearl Cove NSW

When?

World Habitat Day: 4.30pm, Monday 4th of October, 2021

Who?

All are welcome - it's not recommended to bring children under the age of ten, as there are no child-specific activities organised - however, if your eight-year-old is interested in conversations about homelessness, the environment and asylum seekers, bring them along!

Who are our Human Books?

Celeste Matheson

Formerly living unhoused herself and now an advocate, Celeste's story will be familiar to all too many women who have experienced abuse and been forced to flee from one hardship to another. Celeste's work has earned her an order of Australia and she has dedicated the last four years to organising and campaigning for justice for people who are deprived of shelter.

Bob Crowe

Bob's revolutionary work in bringing back traditional indigenous land management practices to the homeland of his ancestors has been a long, hard road, but after much struggle and heartache, he is overjoyed to see results. Bob consults with organisations all around Australia in an effort to heal the land and encourage leadership from the traditional owners, for decisions that will impact the future of all Australians.

Musa Abdullah

After being forced to flee Afghanistan with his father and brother, Musa's experiences as a teenage asylum seeker are a heartbreaking human story of displacement, loneliness, bitter disappointment and, ultimately, hope. Musa is a Pearl Cove resident whose story ought to be known by everyone, as his search for home ultimately led him here.

  Minna Williamson

Minna's work as an indigenous climate scientist has taken her all over the world, but she says she will always wish to return to her home Australia - a land that is already feeling the effects of climate change in brutal summers and violent floods. Minna's invaluable research is admired internationally.

Image credit: "Rainbow Flag" by -Marlith-

Do you want to learn more about LGBTQ+ people but are too scared to ask? Come to Pearl Cove Library to learn more about LGBTQ+ identities and experiences through our Human Library event!

When: Thursday, June 10th from 5pm–7pm
Where: Pearl Cove Library's Pearl Room, located adjacent to the library.

What is Pride Month?

Pride month is celebrated every year in June to honour the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, a significant milestone in the Gay Liberation in the United States. The goal of these celebrations is to bring awareness to LGBTQ+ identities and recognise the influences LGBTQ+ people have had across the globe. For the entire month of June, pride memorials, parades and events occur.

What is a Human Library?

The Human Library was created in 2000 in Copenhagen by Ronni Abergel and his brother, Dany, along with their colleagues, Asma Mouna and Christoffer Erichsen. The event offered a broad range of living 'books'—that is, people—with all kinds of experiences to 'borrow'. Attendees would ask questions and talk with these 'books' to challenge stereotypes and gain a deeper understanding of the world around them. For more information, visit Human Library

About the event

How is Pearl Cove Library planning to adapt this event to our community? By training our own volunteer 'books' to talk to you. We've found diverse LGBTQ+ books for attendees to speak with in a 10 minute timeframe, including Indigenous Australians, Seniors and younger LGBTQ+ people, and even Benjamin Law, an LGBTQ+ writer and journalist from Australia! Benjamin will be giving a free talk on the day to give you the opportunity to learn more about the LGBTQ+ community. This event also provides free finger-foods and complimentary tea and coffee to all participating.
