The First and the New

Warning: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are warned that the following Blog Post may contain images of deceased persons.

We pay respects to the Elders, past and present of Pearl Cove, and Aboriginal Elders of other communities.

Have you ever wondered about the First People of Australia?

Chances are, you or your ancestors were immigrants or people forced to come to Australia.

The First People of Australia were the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. While there initially much more, today, they only make up a small percentage of the Australian population despite being the first inhabitants. Additionally, they have suffered from racist stereotypes concerning their way of life, history, and way they interact with the government.

But, they are not the only group receiving discrimination. Refugees as arriving, being displaced due to reasons such as war and famine have been in many cases turned away, with the those allowed in, still suffering. One being from stereotypes such as they not being able to speak English or are trying to leech off Australia's resources.

Human Library Event

With Mabo Day (3rd June) and World Refugee Day (20th June) coming closer, there has been no better time than to have a Human Library Event.

A Human Library is a library of people. It is where people can borrow Human Books, volunteers that have agreed to talk with the public on a personal level in order to dispel stereotypes about them or their culture, religion and social lifestyle.

This year, on 12th of June, Saturday, we plan on having a Human Library Event with eight different volunteers, about twenty minutes each sessions with ten minute breaks between. We will have Human Books from both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds, as well as refugees who have been displaced and forced to come to Australia. The idea behind this Human Library Event is of course to dispel the stereotypes that our Books have been subjected to and to show the truth.
