What is Human Living Library?

The Human Living Libraries started in 2000 with a Danish youth non-government organization called Stop the Violence. It aims to address people’s prejudices by helping them to talk to those they would not normally meet. The organization uses a library analogy of lending people rather than books. These people have “experienced prejudice, social exclusion or stigma,” and participants can ask them questions so as to “learn about the other person and also challenge their own prejudices.”

The characteristics of Human Living Library

The big difference at a Human Library is that our “books” are people – Human Books - and the “reading” that happens in a Human Library is a conversation between a Reader and their Human Book. The wonderful thing about reading a Human Book is that the conversation goes exactly where a Reader wants it to go and this makes it possible for the Reader to learn about someone who is different and to talk about things they have always wanted to know but have not been able to ask.

What is mental health?   ''Mental health is about wellness rather than illness''

‘Mental health’ is often used as a substitute for mental health conditions – such as depressionanxiety conditions, schizophrenia, and others. According to the World Health Organization, however, mental health is “a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”  Research shows that high levels of mental health are associated with increased learning, creativity and productivity, more pro-social behavior and positive social relationships, and improved physical health and life expectancy.
