Colours of the Community: A celebration of Refugee Week

Come down to the Pearl Cove Library for a special upcoming event!

Pearl Cove Library is proud to announce that a new event celebrating refugees and Refugee Week is coming soon. It will be in the form of a Human Library, where instead of borrowing books people will be able to borrow 'people' for a 1 on 1 conversation. Take this opportunity to find out more about the refugees in your community and the stories they experienced before and after coming to Pearl Cove.

Event Details:

Date and Time: Saturday, June 20 at 11:00AM

Duration: 5 hours, finish at 4:00PM

Location: Pearl Cove Library, main seating area

Entry Fee: Free!

Bookings: Please visit  Eventbrite for more information.

With the world entering an age of increasing nationalisation and conflict, accepting and welcoming refugees into our country and community has become more and more important. To get to this point many people had to undergo tribulations, hazardous journeys, and extreme amounts of uncertainty and fear. But even after they arrive into their new home, these feelings may not dissipate. They can require time and help to understand and become accustomed to a culture that may be very different to what they are used to. By coming along to this event you will have an opportunity to find out their stories and get a glimpse into their lives.

Frequently asked questions:

Why a Human Library?

A human library is a platform which allows for more in-depth and complex topics to be discussed in their own words by the human 'book'. During this frank conversation, you can ask questions you may have but are hesitant to ask. We chose to use the human library because refugees have a very diverse background and it can be difficult to find information which is directly useful. The human books provide a perspective that you can use to clarify and understand concepts that may be outside your normal frame of reference.

Do I have to bring anything?

You just have to bring yourselves and an open mind to this event. Food will not be provided, but there is a cafe on site and several other food eateries within walking distance.

How long will this take?

Each conversation with a book will take approximately 30 minutes. Please be aware that due to booking and time restraints, each session must finish within the allocated slot.

Are you able to accommodate for people with disabilities?

Of course! The library has a clearly marked entrance way with ramps, and the route to and from the event area is large enough for a wheelchair to navigate through and we have several handrails around the sides of the walls. There is also a disabled toilet close to the seating area and signs posted around the library. If you have any particular concerns, please let the library know.

Celebrate Us As Art

* INDIVIDUALLY CRAFTED *

Harmony Day is a day for all Australians to celebrate our cultural diversity and to learn from one another about what makes us who we are. So why not come celebrate Pearl Cove's diverse community in a new way with our Human Living Libraries event.

Our event, Individually Crafted, gives you the opportunity to sit down and have a conversation with someone who you wouldn't normally cross paths within your day-to-day life. All of our 'Living Books' are people who have volunteered themselves to represent a stigmatised group within a community. Our 10 volunteers have all found themselves dabbling at some point during their life in the creative arts in some way shape or form. Whether it be how they have overcome, or how they are learning to overcome the setbacks in the different fields of the creative industry. Or how they have embraced their culture and heritage in a way that lets them showcase their artform, whether physical or intangible, to the wider community.

Among our 10 volunteers are:
  •  Andy: an Indigenous Australian mural artist,
  • Cassandra: a Syrian photographer,
  • Jordan: a dancer with Sydney Dance Company
  • Terry: a music teacher of many years.

Listen and talk to them about how they have overcome difficulties and embraced and celebrated their creativity and artforms.

To see the full list of 'Living Books' and more details please go to our Eventbrite page.

Pearl Cove library staff are excited to    announce that this year we will be celebrating NAIDOC week with a living library event.

But wait, what is a living                                              library???????????

                     Good question ๐Ÿ‘

The short answer is that instead of borrowing a book you borrow time                                                with a person and they can tell you their story.

For more information have a look at the living libraries Australia site.
                                    https://www.humanlibraryaus.org/

Borrowing a living book gives us the chance to open our

minds and hearts to the stories of others in a

                                           trusting and safe place.

So in honour of NAIDOC week four members of the indigenous community  will be joining us to share their stories and experiences in a one day event
which will be held in the pearl room at pearl cove library. Each session will run for half an hour and will be structured as a one on one conversation between the book and you. This is a wonderful opertunity to meet some incrediable people and learn about the work they are doing on a local and national level.

OUR BOOKS FOR THE DAY WILL BE.........

          * Faith, a local elder and activist who will talk about life growing up in Pearl Cove and share some stories she was told by her elders.

         * Jessie, Pearl Cove resident and rising star in the indigenous dance movement

* Bruce Pasco, A respected historian who wrote the award winner book "Dark Emu" which has brought attention to traditional indigenous farming pratictices in pre colonial Australia.

* Kirsten Bank, an astrophysicist and  Indigenous science leader who has been bringing Aboriginal astromony to the Australian public and academia.

As spaces are strictly limited is recomended to book well in advance. To book and for further information ring pearl cove library on 99790000 or email the event co oridnator elizabeth@pearlcovelibrary.com.au

Don't Judge A Book Bi Their Cover: Celebrate Bisexuality Day

Don't Judge A Book Bi Their Cover!

Pearl Cove Library and the Sydney Bi Plus Network (https://sydneybiplusnetwork.org/about-1) have partnered to celebrate bisexuality within our community by presenting the Human Living Library event "Don't Judge A Book Bi Their Cover: Celebrate Bisexuality Day"!

This event aims to help to remove the stigma that surrounds being bisexual in our society. Female bisexuals are often fetishized by the media, in film and on TV while male bisexuals face total erasure even within the LGBTQIA+ community.

The event will allow members of the bisexual community (our "books") to speak one-on-one with members of the Pearl Cove community who may have little to no experience with someone who is open with their bisexuality.

What is a Human Living Library?

The Human Living Library is the concept of borrowing people from a library who act as ‘books’ to those who loan them out. This is typically done as an event where the borrowers ask the human books questions about the topic they have been chosen to represent.

These events are designed to reduce prejudice, break down barriers, strengthen communities, and promote social change. For more information on Human Living Libraries in Australia, please see https://www.humanlibraryaus.org/about.

Say Hello to Some Good Bi's, Meet our Books!

Jessica Benson (She/Her): Jessica is a resident of Pearl Cove who has been openly bisexual for over 15 years and is happy to share her story.

Patrick Stratton (He/Him): Patrick is another local resident of Pearl Cove who has been openly bisexual for 4 years.

Amber Loomis (They/Them): Amber is the Sydney Bi+ Network President and has been active in the LGBTQI community for over 10 years.

Michael Inglis (He/Him): Michael is an openly bisexual Indigenous Australian who campaigns for LGBTQI rights with First Nations Rainbow (https://www.firstnationsrainbow.org.au/team).

Human Books Sharing their Story on Mental Health

HUMAN BOOKS SHARING THEIR STORY ON MENTAL HEALTH

Thursday 22 October 2020 6.00-8.00pm

Pearl Cove Library on Level 2 in the library in a marked area - follow the signs and directions from staff.

To register for the event visit our link at Eventbrite or contact Pearl Cove Library on 9217 9991 during library hours or at library@pearlcove.com.au.

This is a free event so book your place with a human book! Suitable for 15 years and above and refreshments provided.

Pearl Cove Library is presenting the Living Library event Human Books Sharing Their Story on Mental Health at Pearl Cove Library where we will be welcoming the community to join us in doing our bit to celebrate mental health month. Human books will include professionals and practitioners who have worked in the mental health field, advocates of mental health from our indigenous community, survivors with their remarkable stories as well as friends and carers who have learnt a lot along the way. Let's break down the stigma of mental illness for better understanding and outcomes for wellbeing in our community. So come "borrow" a human.

The Human Living Libraries concept refers to the activity of a human acting the role of a storyteller for a "reader". It's a conversation and a learning experience between the books and the readers at the library, and the idea of giving a "voice to the voiceless" for marginalised people in response to discrimination and stereotypes.

"The New Normal" : dealing with and embracing life after loss.......... loss of independence, job, a loved one, Country, home, child, freedom, identity..

"The New Normal" : dealing with and embracing life after loss .... loss of independence, job, a loved one, Country, home, child, freedom, identity.

                                         Saturday 22nd August 2020

1:00pm until  4:00pm

This Saturday falls between

18th August: Never Give Up Day and 30th August: National Grief Awareness Day

Everyone experiences loss of someone or something at sometime in their life.
Join us at Pearl Cove Library to have one on one conversations with everyday people in our community who have experienced losses that have changed their lives and are striving to embrace  "The New Normal".

This event is the first in a planned series of Human Living Libraries events to provide opportunities for community members to connect with each other - hearing other people's stories can help build bridges of understanding across demographic and cultural groups and will help to strengthen our Pearl Cove community.

Human Living Libraries is a concept where people ("the books"), who are willing to share their personal stories and life experiences, come together in a safe place with "borrowers/readers", who want to hear their stories, ask questions and engage in conversations with them that they may not be able to do in a different environment.
To find out more about Human Living Libraries :  https://humanlibrary.org/    https://www.humanlibraryaus.org/

Human Living Books at this event will include:
  • an adult refugee who lost their freedom and their homeland
  • an adult who has lost a loved one or child
  • a person who has lost their home and all their family possessions in a fire
  • an Indigenous elder talking about loss of Country, heritage and cultural identity
  • an adult with an acquired physical injury who has lost their independence after a debilitating accident
  • a person who has experienced the loss of their job and family's income
  • an adult who has lost the ability to care for themselves at home
  • an adult who is experiencing the loss of their sight or hearing
Choose a "book" you would like to "borrow" and register for this event, to be held in Pearl Cove Library and the Library Courtyard.
                                                Light refreshments will be served.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your feedback at the end of the event will help us plan for the next in this series:

"The New Normal": dealing with and embracing life after.......                                                                  (insert one of life's big challenges for each event in the series)

*change (retirement, relocation)  *a breakdown (relationship, mental health)   *a big decision (drug taking, suicide attempt)   * a revelation (adoption discovery, coming out as LGBTIQ)   *a diagnosis (cancer, degenerative disease, autism, dementia)
