NAIDOC WEEK HUMAN LIBRARY EVENT

 Hear their stories. It’s time.

As part of NAIDOC Week 2021, Pearl Cove Library is running a Human Library event. National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week is a time for Australians to celebrate the culture and history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Earlier this year, the world was rocked by the murder of George Floyd. The Black Lives Matter movement that followed showed how far Australia has to go itself with improving the inequalities in Australia. NAIDOC Week is one time where we can learn more about the Aboriginal community.

The Stolen Generation is part of Australia's history of terrible treatment towards the Aboriginal people. This human library is an event where you can come and have conversations with stolen generation survivors and learn more about their experiences, as well at their experience of racism in Australia. For a long time there hasn't been enough education and light shed on this event. Come along to hear their stories as we try and change this.

What is a Human Library event?

The purpose of the human library is for people to engage in their differences through conversation so they can learn and become educated. At human library events people have volunteered to be the ‘books’ and the attendees who come can ‘borrow’ the books for a specified amount of time. During this time attendees can ask the book questions without judgement in a safe environment. Human library events aim to challenge stereotypes and prejudice and make communities more inclusive and culturally aware.

Pearl Cove Library presents: The Power of Community – a Human Living Library Event

What is a Human Living Library?

The basic concept of Human Living Libraries is self-explanatory: the books can be any one person who is willing to tell their personal story or a faction of their own story in a one-on-one conversation, which normally goes on for no shorter than thirty minutes, as one can hardly have a meaningful conversation about anything in less time than that.

The first Human Living Libraries event was part of a project for Roskilde Festival in Copenhagen in 2000. Their goal was to challenge stereotypes and talk about subjects often considered taboo.

More information about this global initiative:

    About the event

This event is featuring the following four human books of different minority backgrounds living in Australia, the theme of the event is combating isolation, unemployment, racism, cultural differences and general loneliness that comes with belonging to a minority group and the power of community raising up to lend a helping hand. This event is to bring culturally diverse people together to start a conversation and make a change, as it has been proven in the past that when the sons and daughters of many cultures work together is when the real magic happens.

    About the books

One of the books is a first generation Chinese migrant who has built a restaurant franchise in the region,
Our second book is an Indigenous Australian musician who busks for a living and teaches music to children in his community (and is married to a first generation European migrant, thus knows each side of being part of a minority extremely well),
Our third book is Iranian, whose family fled Iran in the early 2000s, she is completing her doctorate through a scholarship, rising to success from poverty and hardship,
Our fourth living book is from the UK, is a university professor in his 50s and has the knowledge of what it is like to migrate to Australia from an English speaking country.

The event takes place on Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development Day.

The day the books come to life

Did you ever find yourself wondering what life in another country might look like? Or how other cultures view local customs? Here’s your chance: “Hear their story” is a human library event where you can talk to real individuals with various backgrounds and amazing experiences to share.

At its core, a human library is an event where people can borrow “living books”, usually volunteers with various backgrounds or representatives of certain groups and, as such, very interesting stories to tell. Human books can be interacted with and present the “reader” with an opportunity to ask specific questions or engage in meaningful conversation.

“Hear their story” focuses on diversity and inclusiveness and is an amazing opportunity to engage with a rich, growing cultural community.

The event is part of Harmony Week, a celebration of Australia’s multiculturalism which promotes respect and belonging for everyone, regardless of their background.

Another part of this event is the “Common Grounds” exhibition, which showcases paintings and photographs presented and explained by the artists themselves. It's a chance to get a peek inside an artist’s mindset and get a better understanding of their art and its meaning.

There will be 10 “living books” available at the event, from official NSW Government and Community representatives to refugees and artists. Here are some of them

  • Omar Al Kassab - a Syrian refugee, activist and humanitarian campaigner
  • Annette Webb - an Aboriginal Dunghetti artist born in Sydney
  • Nasim Nasr - an Iranian artist and photographer
  • Iman Shirinia -  an Iranian refugee, now member of the ACT Parks Rural Fire Brigade.

Just book your slot below, show up, pick a “book” and listen. It’s as easy as talking to any other person, no previous experience required but a certain amount of curiosity is encouraged 😉

Each person that signs up will have a dedicated 30 minute slot with a human book of their choosing. The number of available slots is limited so bookings are essential.

See you then!

Human Books Sharing their Story on Mental Health

HUMAN BOOKS SHARING THEIR STORY ON MENTAL HEALTH

Thursday 22 October 2020 6.00-8.00pm

Pearl Cove Library on Level 2 in the library in a marked area - follow the signs and directions from staff.

To register for the event visit our link at Eventbrite or contact Pearl Cove Library on 9217 9991 during library hours or at library@pearlcove.com.au.

This is a free event so book your place with a human book! Suitable for 15 years and above and refreshments provided.

Pearl Cove Library is presenting the Living Library event Human Books Sharing Their Story on Mental Health at Pearl Cove Library where we will be welcoming the community to join us in doing our bit to celebrate mental health month. Human books will include professionals and practitioners who have worked in the mental health field, advocates of mental health from our indigenous community, survivors with their remarkable stories as well as friends and carers who have learnt a lot along the way. Let's break down the stigma of mental illness for better understanding and outcomes for wellbeing in our community. So come "borrow" a human.

The Human Living Libraries concept refers to the activity of a human acting the role of a storyteller for a "reader". It's a conversation and a learning experience between the books and the readers at the library, and the idea of giving a "voice to the voiceless" for marginalised people in response to discrimination and stereotypes.

Discover Our Heritage & Our Future

Join Pearl Cove Library as we hold our community’s first ever
Human Library
where the books are alive and the stories are real.

On Saturday 21 May 2020, you can borrow books just for the morning, but this time the books are humans.  Following the practice of Denmark’s renowned Human Library, each one of the books at this event will be a living Pearl Cove community member who represents our multicultural heritage and our future.

We’ll have Living Books from our indigenous, refugee and migrant communities, as well as a Book whose great, great, great grandfather was among the original Pearl Cove founders. They'll tell stories of a community's struggles brought by racial, cultural, physical and religious difference to live a life of peace and equality in our beautiful town.

Our Human Library will take place over a delicious morning tea designed by our own Heritage Committee to reflect the diversity of our community. We’ll invite attendees to borrow the Living Books for open discussions in small groups.

This is a FREE event to unite and celebrate community so we can grow the future together.

Bookings are essential as this is a limited number event.
Click here to book through Eventbrite.
