SATURDAY JUNE 2512-2 pm FREE ENTRY Register online via TryBooking

A human library event is where people of different backgrounds come together to talk about their experience often with experiencing marginalisation or hardship within a community. People with stories to tell are able to be borrowed like ‘books’ and ‘read’ by a group or audience. This forms a temporary ‘Human Library” where real life  experiences can be shared and questions asked and reflected upon.

For this human library event, we wanted to share the stories of how diverse members of the community  could share useful tips, life advice and experience around the topic of personal finance to reach all types of members of the community.

The speakers will range from a business owner, retiree, first home buyer and Indigenous Artist to represent personal finance and solutions from all different perspectives.

The Evolution Within

The Evolution Within

A Living library Project documenting changes within each one of us in front our eyes

When the word "evolution" comes up, you might think back to high school science class and searching in your memory prepare to tell the macro story about humanity for over billions of years. However, the meaning of evolution can be explain in a more general way before modern science took its place. Evolution is the process of a gradual development that growing into complexity over time. In other words, anything that is able to change, given time can evolve, not only in the context of science.

In this livig library project, our presenters will share their own stories with the audience about how they had experienced and adapted external changes in their life, and evolve within themselves to beat the odd.

It is up to us, the future of Sea Turtles

It is up to us, the future of Sea Turtles
Saturday March 3rd, 2018
11:00 am-5:00 pm
Pearl Cove Library

The 3rd of March is UN World Wildlife Day. A Day where we focus on the important role the planet’s wild animals and plants play in our cultures and the sustainability of our societies.

This year, the focus is on Sea Turtles. These wonderful creatures, the loggerhead, olive ridley, flatback, hawksbill, Kemp’s ridley, leatherback, and the green can be found among the seagrass beds in the Indian Ocean, the reefs of the Coral Triangle and Eastern Pacific sandy beaches.

Sea Turtles face a range of issues such as habitat destruction and being accidentally captured in fishing gear. As they are killed for their shells, meat, eggs and skin they face such issues as over-exploitation and poaching. Climate change also has an effect on the decline of Sea Turtle numbers. This is because the sex of a turtle is determined by sand temperature. Cooler temperatures will result in male hatchlings, while warmer temperatures will result in female hatchlings.

Bookings essential and free.
For more booking info check out our website or come into the Library and speak to our staff.

So, come along and celebrate Sea Turtles.

Talk to our Living Libraries and find out what is being done and what you can do to help preserve our Sea Turtles.

Bioscience: Breaking barriers

Pearl Cove Library is celebrating National Science Week with a Human Living Library event. Human Living Libraries facilitate one-on-one conversation between "Readers" and "Books." Books are real people from the local or wider community who share their personal stories, experiences and knowledge.

The theme for this years national science week is Game Changers and Change Makers. Some of the greatest scientific game changers of recent decades have come from the field of bioscience - the science of life. It's an area that is rapidly developing exciting new technologies and discoveries that will shape our future, from innovations in health and disease, to saving threatened plant and animal species. Our Living Books are breaking down the barriers of traditional science to encourage more open, collaborative and accessible science.

Some of the Living Books who will be available to borrow for a 20 minute chat include:

Dr. Alice Williamson: Open Source Scientist, University of Sydney
Open source scientists publish their work online, in real time, allowing their research to be freely accessed by anyone in the world. As well as lecturing at the University of Sydney and presenting on ABC radio, Dr. Williamson has been working with high school students to develop an open source anti-malarial drug.

Symeon Marou: Indigenous ranger working in native species recovery
Symeon works together with conservation scientists and other indigenous rangers, who use their unique knowledge of the land to collect data on pests and native animals.

Charlotte Lawrence-Slater: Cancer survivor and advocate for genetic sequencing in disease treatment
In 2014, Charlotte was diagnosed with an aggressive form of adrenal cancer and given less than a year to live. She was faced with a lack of treatment options until her genome was sequenced by the Garvan Institute in only 10 days, allowing for identification of a specific gene mutation which could be treated with drugs originally used to target an unrelated form of cancer.

Karlie Noon: Indigenous science graduate
Karlie grew up in a poor household in rural Australia. She became the first person in her family to study at university and is currently completing her PhD, alongside working with the CSIRO's Indigenous STEM education Project through which she mentors indigenous students.
