What if books could talk and
explain why they shouldn't be judged by their covers? Thanks to an unusual
library-sponsored program called the Human Library, the concept originated in
Denmark in 2000, now they can. "Living books" that can be
"checked out" by area residents aim to dispel stereotypes is the
basis for a worldwide initiative that will make its debut in Pearl Cove Library
during this special event.
The theme of this event reflects what it means to be
Australian and the significance of Australia Day. Our living ‘books’ are an extraordinary
group of volunteers who enjoy sharing their stories with others. Their
backgrounds are diverse in terms of culture, language, faith, gender, sexuality,
age, ability and occupation. The
diversity makes up our wonderful community and love for Australia.
Please come to ‘borrow and
interact’ with our living books and share this meaningful and memorable event
with our ‘heroes’ while enjoying complimentary light refreshments.
