Borrow a Living, Breathing Book at Pearl Cove Library

As a part of our year of Human Living Libraries events, Pearl Cove Library invites adults to join us in sharing a conversation (or two) with a sex worker for the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers (IDEVASW). IDEVASW started on 17th December 2003 as a memorial and vigil for the victims of the Green State Killer and calls attention to the hate crimes committed against sex workers around the globe.

Six human 'books' will be available for you to borrow for a conversation with a wide range of experiences and identities including gender diverse persons, mothers, students, and activists. Sex work is almost as glamourised as it is stigmatised, so come ready to challenge your perceptions of workers and the industry. You will receive a glass of bubbles at the opening ceremony to toast to the lives of sex workers lost to violence each year.

⚠ Guests are advised that sensitive topics such as physical abuse, rape, and murder will be discussed in a non-gratuitous manner  ⚠

              Get To Know The Land You Live On! 

Are you interested in learning about Pearl Coves' native land?

Come together with local Aboriginal Elders and members of the Indigenous community to learn about the history of Pearl Cove.

As a part of History Week, 2021 we are hosting a Human Living Library Event where the books come to life as people and you can have one on one personal interactions with members of our local Aboriginal Community and listen to a side of history you don't always get to hear.

What is a Human Library?

A library where the books are people and you get to have engaging conversations with local members of the indigenous community in a safe and inclusive environment, allowing people to talk about all sorts of things that don’t come up in conversation in our everyday lives.

The Human Living library was created to help fight stereotypes.

Our event will have 8 members of the local indigenous community which you get to have 

1-on-1 conversations with or in small groups to ask and learn about Pearl Coves indigenous history.

To celebrate this year's International Youth Day Pearl Cove Library is going to be hosting a free Living Library event so come along and meet the range of youths who live in our community!

What exactly is a Living Library?

A living library is an event that allows people from all walks of life the opportunity to meet and have a chat, to ask questions and broaden their understandings about others.

These events began as a means to overcome discrimination and stigma within communities. They work by having a selection of people volunteer to be "books" to be "borrowed" for a period of time to answer questions about their lives and to chat about their experiences.

Our Event

We have a great group of 15 volunteers from a range of backgrounds; from early school leavers, to youth activists, people who were your age 30 years ago and prospective employers who have all agreed to talk about their experiences and answer your questions.

Each "book" can be borrowed for a period of 20 minutes, to see the full list of titles and to book a session visit our Eventbrite.

Come along, have a chat, ask some burning questions and enjoy yourself!

Where: The courtyard of the Pearl Cove Central Library

This event is for teenagers and young adults but anyone is welcome to come along. Children under 12 will need to be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Pearl Cove Library has books that talk

Connecting together as humans - Our shared stories

Pearl Cove Library is excited to be able to host a special event that will bring our diverse but close knit community together to listen to the stories of some of our fellow community members who have and in some cases are living very different lives today than ourselves. This event will bring greater understanding of each other and the realization that though we are different in some ways we are also the same.

The Human Living Library Books events are a concept to create a safe space where people with different stories such as refuges, homeless, people with mental health issues, a disability can become a human living book and discuss their story with others who loan them out for 30 minutes. This idea was started in Copenhagen Denmark back in 2000 and has spread all over the world. The event will be held in October 2021, which is Mental Health Month on Wednesday the 20th between 1pm and 4pm.

The cost of  the event is $10.00. Afternoon tea is included.

The day the books come to life

Did you ever find yourself wondering what life in another country might look like? Or how other cultures view local customs? Here’s your chance: “Hear their story” is a human library event where you can talk to real individuals with various backgrounds and amazing experiences to share.

At its core, a human library is an event where people can borrow “living books”, usually volunteers with various backgrounds or representatives of certain groups and, as such, very interesting stories to tell. Human books can be interacted with and present the “reader” with an opportunity to ask specific questions or engage in meaningful conversation.

“Hear their story” focuses on diversity and inclusiveness and is an amazing opportunity to engage with a rich, growing cultural community.

The event is part of Harmony Week, a celebration of Australia’s multiculturalism which promotes respect and belonging for everyone, regardless of their background.

Another part of this event is the “Common Grounds” exhibition, which showcases paintings and photographs presented and explained by the artists themselves. It's a chance to get a peek inside an artist’s mindset and get a better understanding of their art and its meaning.

There will be 10 “living books” available at the event, from official NSW Government and Community representatives to refugees and artists. Here are some of them

• Omar Al Kassab - a Syrian refugee, activist and humanitarian campaigner
• Annette Webb - an Aboriginal Dunghetti artist born in Sydney
• Nasim Nasr - an Iranian artist and photographer
• Iman Shirinia -  an Iranian refugee, now member of the ACT Parks Rural Fire Brigade.

Just book your slot below, show up, pick a “book” and listen. It’s as easy as talking to any other person, no previous experience required but a certain amount of curiosity is encouraged 😉

Each person that signs up will have a dedicated 30 minute slot with a human book of their choosing. The number of available slots is limited so bookings are essential.

What’s a Human Library?

In the Human Library, a book is a person that volunteered to represent a stigmatized group in the community. The books, based on their personal experiences, can answer questions from readers to help challenge what is being said/told/understood about a given topic.

What to anticipate on the day?

We invited 12 “books” to provide their experience on equality of opportunity. They offer different perspectives including that from the indigenous community, single parents, senior citizens, and equality right activists.

The borrowers will be able to “borrow” the book for 20-30 minutes. Have a conversation, ask questions, share experiences, challenge mindsets. The books are able to surrender to the agenda of the reader and allow them control of the conversation.

Purpose of this Event

Pearl Cove Library would like to celebrate International Women's Day to honour the social, 

political, historical, professional and personal achievements of women in the local community of 

Pearl Cove. We welcome all ladies to come in and meet other culturally diverse women in Pearl 

Cove. This event is an opportunity to hear some stories of Human Living Books during a warm 

evening in a friendly atmosphere at Pearl Room adjacent to Pearl Cove Library. 

Human Living Books

1. Sarah is a 35-year-old single mother and a primary school teacher in Pearl Cove.

She would share her stories of juggling responsibilities of caring for her five-year-old son and working as a primary school teacher.

2. Alia is a 24-year-old young Australian woman of Indian background who is an engineer.  

She would share her stories as a young female engineer working in a male-dominated profession.

3. Nasima is a 47-year-old woman from Iran who would express the challenges and experiences of motherhood. 

4. Sushmita is a 38-year-old qualified Bangladeshi doctor who has studied in the United Kingdom would share her experiences of working as a female general practitioner in Australia.

5. Aynoor is a 29-year-old Pakistani woman who would share her stories of being a victim of domestic violence. She aims to encourage women to understand that domestic violence is a serious issue, and they need to speak up and seek help.

At Pearl Cove Library, we have chosen the special event of World InterFaith Harmony week. The events purpose is to break down barriers between all the demographics in the Pearl Cove community and promote inclusivity. 

This observance has been chosen with the idea “that mutual understanding and interreligious dialogue constitute important dimensions of a culture of peace and established World Interfaith Harmony Week as a way to promote harmony between all people regardless of their faith.”

The event will take place on Saturday, February 5^th 2022 and what an event it looking to be! We have members from the local Catholic church, Mosque, Buddhist temple and a local member of the Aboriginal community as our "Books". They look forward to conversing with a range of people and close any gaps there may be in understanding of who they are, what they believe or where they are from as well as many other subjects.

It is to be held in the Pearl Cove Library courtyard hopefully utilising the advantage of a beautiful summers day. Food will be provided by our lovely Library Cafe. As an added bonus, you will receive food vouchers upon booking your time slot for the day to the value of $10!

 What is The Human Living library? 

The idea to read a person like a book is not new, but these days this metaphor has transformed into an exciting initiative of the human book library. The first Human Library was organised in 2000 in Copenhagen by the group Stop The Violence. The main purpose of this event was “to challenge prejudices, to encourage dialog, and to build relationships” among diverse student society. The goals of every Human Library since have been similar: to challenges stereotypes, to increase the level of understanding and tolerance among diverse society.

The Pearl Cove library is happy to introduce the first  Human Living library to our community.

If you would like to:

• is to increase awareness about learning disabilities,
• to give people access to information from the first hands,
• to ask the most relevant questions to people who are living with learning disabilities,
• to open mind about their strength and creativity.
• to find a supportive community and close-minded people, 

 

Our Human Living library is for you!

 

We invite parents (families) who have children with learning disabilities, young adults, teenagers who experienced learning difficulties, problems with employment and may need to clarify what kind of support they may expect from educational institutions or employers.

Our living Books are specialists in this area and successful people with learning disabilities, who are happy to share their knowledge and experience with you.
