United Nations. (2020). International Mother Language Day [poster]. UNESCO. https://www.un.org/en/observances/mother-language-day
International Mother Language Day celebrates the diversity of all languages used by peoples of the world. It seeks to preserve and protect linguistic diversity, and promote unity and understanding through multiculturalism and multilingualism.

As part of our Human Libraries Event, come down to Pearl Cove Library and share a 20 minute conversation with one of our eight "Living Books" and learn more about growing up and living in a multilingual household and being part of a multicultural community.

Our Books, chosen from Pearl Cove's own diverse community, will open up on their struggles and achievements faced while being part of Australian society and their approach to maintaining ties to their cultural backgrounds.

Pearl Cove Malaria Month living library event: A Day of Discussion: (Thomas Rudkin)

A Day of DiscussionImage result for malaria

Pearl Cove Malaria Month
Saturday 25th April 2019 - 1:00pm-4:00pm
Pearl Cove Library - 47 Cricket Road, Pearl Cove, 2068
Booking available on library website

Further information on World Malaria Day 2019 can be found at the World Health Organisation website: https://www.who.int/campaigns/world-malaria-day/world-malaria-day-2019

Annually, hundreds of thousands of people lose their lives to malaria, a number that has not improved in recent years. Coinciding with World Malaria Day, a day in dedication to the efforts made to stop this disease once and for all, Pearl Cove Library will be hosting a human living library event in order to raise awareness to the extent of this disease and the continued attempts to stop it.

Where and when do I go?

We'll all be in the café attached to the library building. The event will begin at 1pm on the 25th April, World Malaria Day and run until 4pm.

How do I book?

We have a page dedicated to the event on the Pearl Cove Library website. A link to book your place is at the bottom of said page. Simply click the link and fill in the requested details to proceed! To reach our library website, just click the following link:

If you have any questions or need any help, don't hesitate to call us on (02) 9365 2361, or e-mail us at  pearlcovelibraryeventinquiries@gmail.com.

What can I expect?

We're trying to create an atmosphere of casual and informal discussion. Our current plan is to have us all sit at the café with some snacks and a good drink while our specially ordered "books" (our guest speakers) share their stories. This may take the shape of a personal conversation or a speech to the whole café. This will continue for two and a half hours, with two 15-minute breaks throughout the course of the afternoon. We hope that you'll leave with an increased understanding of the perils of malaria and a willingness to engage in further discussions with the community in the future. If you feel we succeeded or failed with these aims, then feel free to let us know! You'll be given the opportunity to give your feedback at the end of the event.

Who are the speakers?

Dr. Joseph Kennedy, specialist in pathogens

David Zavimbe, survivor of malaria

Alexandria Binks, family member of a malaria sufferer

Dr. Nicole Smith, pathologist and humanitarian worker

We hope to see you there!

Tell your friends and share on social media. The more readers, the better!

               11 Dolphin St.
               Pearl Cove 1111

Have you ever wondered...
Who can become an organ donor?
Who does organ donation benefit?
Is organ donation against my religion?

Learn the answers to these questions and more at the 'Life Goes On: the Life-Changing Magic of Organ Donation' Human Library event.

The life-changing magic of organ donation
Currently, more than 1400 Australians are wait-listed for an organ transplant. Organ donation transforms the lives of both recipients and their families, yet myths and misinformation abound.
Challenge your preconceptions and learn how organ donation changes lives, who can donate, donation and religion, and so much more.

The Human Library - where the books are human beings
The Human Library's motto is "Unjudge someone". Since 2000, the Human Library has hosted events around the world where people can come together to share their knowledge and experiences in a safe space. Attendees can borrow human "books" and hear their stories, expanding their worldview and challenging stereotypes.
At the Human Library, the taboo is the norm and all cards are on the table.

Meet the Books
Lachlan Ross: Indigenous community leader, activist for improved care and access to transplants for Aboriginal patients, and organ transplant recipient.
Mohammad Farran: 15-year-old Mohammad received a heart transplant at age 10, and was an ambassador for the 2016 Australian Transplant Games.
Jessica Southers: Received a cornea transplant at 19 that restored her sight, and is now herself a registered donor.
Mary Chan: Chinese-Australian kidney transplant recipient.
Jane Doe: Jane's son, a registered organ and tissue donor, passed away at age 21, saving many lives through his gift of donation.
Dr Paul Lawton: Kidney specialist at the Menzies School of Health Research, who has spent most of his career working in clinics in Indigenous communities.
John Smith: Counsellor at the National DonateLife Family Support Service, providing support for donor families before, during and after the donation process.

Join us on Saturday 20th July for an afternoon of thoughtful conversation and learning new perspectives. Talk to experts and those in our community whose lives have been touched by a gift of organ donation.
