Hear from the Homeless: living life on the streets

Hear from the Homeless: living life on the streets

Have you ever seen someone living rough on the streets and wondered how they came to be in such a situation?

Do you wonder where they get food from and do they reach out to organisations for help, a place to shower or get a hot meal?

Shelter: A Living Libraries Project

Shelter.
A living libraries project
October 8-13th

Pearl Cove Council has always taken pride in listening to and celebrating the stories within our vibrant community. In October, the month of Homelessness Awareness, Pearl Cove Library welcomes our members to listen to Pearl Cove's invisible storytellers -- those living without reliable shelter, and the people that work with them. Pearl Cove is working together with the Human Libraries Project to bring their stories into the light.

Throughout the week, we invite a select group of people that have volunteered their time to become 'books' to be borrowed, to share their stories with Pearl Cove and talk about the realities of a life that is often overlooked or misunderstood. Our Knitting groups are also running a Knit-In knitting drive on Wednesday, working on blankets, bags and beanies to donate to the Pearl Cove Outreach group at the end of the week.

Our biggest event will be the Saturday Picnic, where we aim to bring together all of Pearl Cove to celebrate our entire community and to connect those in need with the services they require. Come join us and greet faces old and new over a free lunch provided in part by our Local Soup Kitchen! Local outreach groups and the VakS Street Doctor will also be in attendance to get to know the community and maybe reach out to those who need their services most.
