This event offers information on the International Mother Language Day which will be celebrated on 23 February 2018. Human living libraries in Pearl Cove Library deliberated importance of celebrating the International Language Day. Its role in representation of human libraries and borrow their remarkable a living history of their life and share in the special event.
 

 We represent the special speakers as big Hearts as Human Living Libraries. Its never ever happened before in Pearl Cove Library.

• Melissa Jackson: Borrow a passion for Aboriginal history and Language
• Lam Binh: Borrow a refugee for first boat people from Vietnam 1976 to Australia for freedom
• Philip Jensen: Borrow a witness of 500th Reformation of Questioning Christianity.

Indigenous Literacy Day is a national celebration of indigenous stories, language and culture. Pearl Cove school students will attend sessions over a two week period, interacting with Human Books. These Human Libraries will provide a primary source of information on Indigenous children in remote communities and the Pearl Cove indigenous community, past, present and future.

 Students will participate in The Great Book Swap in exchange for a gold coin donation. All proceeds are returned to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation and invested into books that preserve the language and stories of the remote communities. So bring a book to swap and encourage literacy for all. For more information please refer to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation website.

International Women’s Day is a worldwide event that celebrates women’s achievements – from the political to the social – while calling for gender equality. It has been observed since the early 1900s and is now recognised each year on March 8. Pearl Cove Public Library is planning an International Women’s Day event for local community in 2018.

We believe that increasing opportunities for women and girls is our essential response to our community that creates health, security and prosperity for families and society as a whole.

This year's May Day celebration marked 126 years since Australia's first May Day March held in 1891 by striking shearers at Barcaldine in Queensland. May Day recognizes the achievements of working people and acknowledges the significance of the eight-hour working day.

So, come on down and revel in your First Amendment rights, hang out and enjoy the crowds, and take all the May Day selfies you can. As always, please contact an officer or call 000, if you have any concerns or need to report an emergency.

Auslan Friendship group Demonstration VERSION 2

Do you sign? Are you interested in learning or practising your signing skills? A small friendly group made up of members of the Deaf Community and Auslan practitioners meet on a weekly basis for a meet and greet, coffee and sign-chat. Students of Auslan and anyone interested in sign language are welcome to join.

On May 20th, Pearl Cove library will be hosting a free living library featuring human books from various cultures. Have a chat to one of our books and learn about their culture, straight from the horse's mouth! You may find unexpected similarities, amazing new facts, and interesting personal anecdotes.

 

Our living library aims to raise awareness for World Day for Cultural Diversity

Do you know an adult who has struggled with reading and writing throughout their life?  Bring them along to this special event so they can talk with others who have been in the same position. Meet some members of our “human living library” who are available to discuss their own hardship and success with literacy.  Learn more about human living libraries

Illiteracy affects many adults in our society and they often feel embarrassment, low self-worth and have no idea about how to access help. Some rely heavily on family and friends to help them get by in our highly literate world. This event will let those who are struggling with illiteracy know that there is help available.

Showcasing members of the LGBTIQ community

Do you have questions about what it's like to live as a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex or questioning person? What about a drag queen? Human living library "books" will be available at Pearl Cove Library on the day of Sydney's iconic Mardi Gras parade. Come and talk to real people with real stories, in a one-on-one or small group setting. Available "titles" will include:

Ginger Minge: life as a drag queen
Don't call me Lesbian: being bisexual
Always the Bridesmaid: I'm not allowed to marry in Australia
Coming out in the Bush: living as a gay Indigenous man
Dark Days: losing friends to suicide
