Phenomenal Woman

Phenomenal Woman

~A Human libraries event~

International Women's Day

 March 8th 2022

International Women's Day

What is a human library?

Howard County Library (March 17, 2018)
Human libraries were started in Copenhagen, Denmark as a means to have people interact with those in different walks of life and hear their stories. A person can 'borrow' a book for a period of time, usually around 20 minutes, and listen to their life story and ask them questions. The aim of human libraries is to facilitate an environment where people can set aside prejudices and learn from the life of another human being. The focus is on eliminatinpreconceptions and inspiring understanding with one another. https://humanlibrary.org/

Phenomenal Woman

Throughout history, women have been kept out of many job markets. Although through the decades they have been making their mark, there are still those industries that make it difficult for women to enter, whether it be physical labour, the sciences or management positions.

Our human library evening, Phenomenal Woman is dedicated to giving a voice to women in predominantly male work environments to share their experiences, challenges and successes. We encourage young women endeavouring to work in these environments to attend and receive advice from these amazing ladies as well as all other members of our community to come and learn about the lifestyle these women lead. We at Pearl Cove Library hope to foster an environment that supports women and praises their accomplishments while acknowledging their struggles.

At Pearl Cove Library, our members love to read: to learn, understand and engage with the books in our collection. We’re staying true to that idea with our monthly Living Library events, except the "books" just happen to be real people, thoughtfully sharing their insights, experiences and perspectives with "readers".

During March, in recognition of Harmony Week and the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the theme of Pearl Cove's Living Library will be Everyone Belongs. This theme embraces Pearl Cove’s cultural and religious diversity, inclusive of First Nations peoples and multicultural migrant heritage.

Check your preconceptions! Have a conversation with someone you think you know. Willing to share their stories with readers, 12 living books will be available to book for sessions of 20 minutes. Join us at this special event where you borrow a person instead of a book. Bookings essential.

Book titles include:
  • One of the stolen generations
  • Community elder
  • First Nations young person… and proud
  • New arrival: a recent migrant
  • Overseas-born Australian
  • First-generation Australian
  • Seeking asylum 1970s: Vietnamese
  • Seeking asylum 2000s: Sudanese
  • Hijabi Muslim
  • Hindu
  • Jewish community member
