What is a human library?

Human libraries were started in Copenhagen, Denmark as a means to have people interact with those in different walks of life and hear their stories. A person can 'borrow' a book for a period of time, usually around 20 minutes, and listen to their life story and ask them questions. The aim of human libraries is to facilitate an environment where people can set aside prejudices and learn from the life of another human being. Phenomenal Woman

Throughout history, women have been kept out of many job markets. Although through the decades they have been making their mark, there are still those industries that make it difficult for women to enter, whether it be physical labour, the sciences or management positions. 

Our human library evening, Phenomenal Woman is dedicated to giving a voice to women in predominantly male work environments to share their experiences, challenges and successes. We encourage young women endeavouring to work in these environments to attend and receive advice from these amazing ladies as well as all other members of our community to come and learn about the lifestyle these women lead. We at Pearl Cove Library hope to foster an environment that supports women and praises their accomplishments while acknowledging their struggles. 

When:     Tuesday March 8th, 2022

Time:       6:00pm - 9:00pm (20 minute sessions within this time)

Where:    Pearl Cove Library Café

Fee:         $5.00 per person (unlimited sessions upon selection at time of booking)

Please note that bookings are for 20 minute sessions and seeing multiple books requires selecting multiple session times.

February 11 is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Join us at Pearl Cove Library for a special Human Living Libraries event.

Human Living Libraries give you the chance to speak to people you wouldn't otherwise meet about topics that don't often come up. 

Women have made great strides in the fields of science, technology and engineering in recent years and perceptions of women’s contributions to science changing. But there is still a long way ahead. 

According to the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources, in 2016, only 14% of STEM professors were women and only 12% of engineers were women.

Our “books” will help you understand the challenges women and girls face in trying to enter and advance careers in the fields of science and engineering. 

Come pick a book and have a chance to ask all the questions you have about women in STEM.

Our books:

• Annie Slattery, the co-founder and CEO of ConX, a company that makes software to bring tradies online
• Taylah Griffin, an indigenous Gangulu STEM student and Boeing Defence Australia STEM ambassador
• Professor Renae Ryan, the academic director of Science in Australia Gender Equity
• Karlie Noon, an indigenous Gomeroi astrophysicist

What's the Human Library?

The Human Library is an event that encourages real conversations with real people. It is a safe space to ask questions about difficult issues. An opportunity to challenge stereotypes, a chance to unjudge someone.

At this event, you can choose to "borrow" a person for a rare 30-minute conversation, and have a chance to have a meaningful conversation with someone you may never have had a chance to before.

This year's International Women's Day theme is #EachForEqual, an initiative to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women's achievements. It's aim is to help create a gender equal world.

Meet the ladies:

 Tanya Plibersek 

• Tanya is currently our Shadow Minister for Education and Training. She had previously held a position as our Minister for the Status of Women between 2007-10, and also worked in the Domestic Violence Unit at the NSW Ministry for the Status and Advancement of Women. She understands the balance between her high-demand work life, and being a wife and a mother of three.

 May W. 

• May is an Australian Aboriginal Eastern Arrernte artist. Her paintings are vibrant watercolours of the outback, using vivid abstract designs and symbols of traditional Aboriginal art. Her colourful journey from a remote town to the bustling city, and the challenges it brings, is a true Australian story.

 Seo-Hyun C. 

• Seo-Hyun is an Australian-born Korean who juggles life as a single parent. Between her duties as a P&C committee member, her regular night job and parenting duties, she brings a humble story of fierce dedication and determination.

 Alex L. 

• Alex provides a unique glimpse into the idea of identity as this queer, non-binary, transgender woman is breaking down all the barriers, and exploring the meaning of the invisible disability.

 Nabila M. 

• Nabila is a young refugee from Iraq with a unique story about changing countries, contrasting cultures, and overcoming challenges. Her youthful perspective also provides an interesting insight in the difficulties that the generation of today face.

You Don't Walk Alone: conversations about violence against women

There are a lot of things that go unsaid; things that women trade like secrets in the dark, on the phone, in the honest spaces of silence when it’s just women. These are the stories of experiences that no one should have to live through – times when carrying your keys in your fist wasn’t enough, when the simple catcall turned out to be more. These are the stories of our mothers, our grandmothers, the culmination of their warnings and wise words – these are the reality for women everywhere.

Pearl Cove Library will be discussing the issue of violence against women at our Human Living Library event in November. The day will be hosted at Pearl Cove Contemporary art space, and will feature human ‘books’ who will be available to be ‘borrowed’ to discuss their experiences with violence. Each session will be intimate, honest, and compelling – spaces are limited, so book today to ensure your spot is reserved.

Come and join us at Pearl Cove Library this March for our one day event of Living Books! Our event will be a High Tea with the theme of women, and celebrating women. The event is for women only to attend, apologies to any men interested in the event. Living books is a great way to connect with people within the community that you may not know much about, and give opportunities to learn about how the lives of others have been affected by different things from cultural or racism exclusion, to cancer survivors. We will have 10 living books and our event is limited to 40 people to attend (50 people including our books!). Be sure to reserve your spot!

The month of March this year is all about women! With events like Women's Health week, International Women's Day, and March into Yellow!  We are looking to encourage women to support one another within the community with our event and to help raise awareness of women's health, physically, mentally and emotionally. For April and the lead-up to Anzac Day  2018, Pearl Bay Library explores the themes of War and Sacrifice. Using the concept of the Human Living Library as well as exhibitions and talks, we will present a multi-faceted look at the lives of those who have been caught up in, given everything to win, and tried to prevent conflict. The Human Library™ is designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue. The Human Library is a place where real people are on loan to readers. A place where difficult questions are expected, appreciated and answered.
