Human Living Libraries is back this month by popular demand! 

This month Pearl Cove Library has chosen the theme ‘Stronger Together,’ in support for the prevention of Domestic Violence. This theme was chosen so that we as a community can be at the forefront of fighting domestic violence together. No one in the community should feel alone in their struggles.

Human Living Libraries is a global initiative which gathers people from all walks of life to be ‘books’ for community members to ‘check out’. The concept comes from the idea that we each have a valuable experience which others can learn from.  

We know that Domestic Violence is a difficult and confronting topic. Pearl Cove Library believes it is the role of the community to come together to speak the truth about difficult topics and to provide tangible assistance through difficult experiences. This event allows us to assist the community by bringing the issue of domestic violence into light and by providing access to the right support for those affected in the community. We have teamed up with White Ribbon (Link to White Ribbon) to create a space for open dialogue about domestic violence. Our volunteer ‘books’ have each encountered domestic violence through their own experience or by working with others.

Our ‘books’ this year include:

An Indigenous Spokesperson from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Committee. 

A Pearl Cove High School Counsellor.

A Domestic Violence Survivor. 

A Local Domestic Violence worker from the Department of Families and Community Services.

Someone who has experienced living in a refuge.

If Those Books Could Talk: Stories of Domestic Violence and How to Prevent It

There are some things people believe shouldn't be talked about - domestic violence is not one of them. As part of Domestic Violence Prevention Month, Pearl Cove Library will be hosting a "Living Library" event allowing this crucial subject to be discussed and talked about.


When: Thursday, 7 May 2020.

Where: The Pearl Room @ Pearl Cove Library.

How much? The event is free but bookings are essential!

Brave individuals from within our own community will be availble as "books" to be borrowed. You'll be able to borrow a book and they'll sit down and talk with you about their experiences with domestic violence.

We will also be joined by a welcome guest, Tarang Chawla, respected lawer and advocate for the group Our Watch, a group dedicated to preventing domestic violence. Tarang will be one of  the "books" availble for borrowing and will be able to answer a lot of important legal questions related to domestic violence.

You Don't Walk Alone: conversations about violence against women

There are a lot of things that go unsaid; things that women trade like secrets in the dark, on the phone, in the honest spaces of silence when it’s just women. These are the stories of experiences that no one should have to live through – times when carrying your keys in your fist wasn’t enough, when the simple catcall turned out to be more. These are the stories of our mothers, our grandmothers, the culmination of their warnings and wise words – these are the reality for women everywhere.

Pearl Cove Library will be discussing the issue of violence against women at our Human Living Library event in November. The day will be hosted at Pearl Cove Contemporary art space, and will feature human ‘books’ who will be available to be ‘borrowed’ to discuss their experiences with violence. Each session will be intimate, honest, and compelling – spaces are limited, so book today to ensure your spot is reserved.

Pearl Cove library will have living library books who are experts or experienced domestic violence and they will share inspirational survival stories, giving legal advice. The living library books will include the White Ribbon personal, campaigner and doctor. All family members, single mothers, women or men, and teenagers also welcomed.
