Welcoming them to a new Home - A Human Library event

Img src: crosslight.org.au

Join us at Pearl Cove Library to celebrate Refugee Week 2022 with a new Human Library event: Welcoming them to a new Home, aimed at connecting new members of our community, specifically refugees from Iran and Syria, to out community here at Pearl Cove. Come meet them and learn their stories and experiences, and to welcome them to our growing community.

What is a Human Library? A Human Library is an event where instead of borrowing a normal book, the participant (that’d be you!) borrows a human ‘book’, with the purpose of talking about their life and learning about their unique experiences. Find out more at https://www.humanlibraryaus.org

What is Refugee Week? Taking place in June every year, Refugee Week is Australia’s annual event to inform and teach the public about refugees and celebrate their contributions to the Australian community. You can learn more at https://www.refugeeweek.org.au/

We welcome the opportunity to learn more about our four speakers or "human books" who represent the Refugee community and have volunteered to participate in this Human Library event. We encourage you to join us, meet our human books and engage in a respectful and interesting conversation.

Our human books are:

Peter Bol                      Australian Olympian.

Behrouz Boochani       Author, journalist, film-maker.

Lowitja O'Donoghue    Advocate for indigenous rights,

                                    Member of Order of  Australia,

                                     Australian of the Year, and

                                     Australian National Treasure.

Samah Shda                International advocate for refugee rights,

                                     Public speaker for Refugee Council.

The Human Library started in Denmark in 2000, and is based on the concept that everyone has a story to tell and can be a “human book”.
The intent is for people to loan out a “human book” as you would in a library and have a respectful conversation.
The aim behind the Human Library concept is to reduce prejudice, judgement, improve knowledge and empathy through conversation.

REFUGEE WEEK- HUMAN LIBRARY EVENT - JUNE 19

In recognition of Refugee Week in June, we have invited a group of newly arrived people to talk about their experiences of living in Pearl Cove at a Human Living Library event.

What is a Human Library?

It operates the same as an everyday library,
except people are borrowed rather than books.
You can borrow a person for 20 minutes and have a conversation with them on why you like living in Pearl Cove.

Did you know?

A refugee is a person who is forced to leave their home. At the end of 2017 there were 68.5 million people who were forcibly removed from their homes. This event hopes to address stereotypes and myths about refugees and fully support them into our Pearl Cove community.

Crossing borders - From fear to the land of hope

https://www.twinkl.com.au/event/refugee-week-2019

Pearl Cove Library is offering you an opportunity to come along and celebrate World Refugee Day with our Living Library. Interact with our human books where you will have a conversation that will give you an insight into the harrowing journey of refugees who have fled their home, family and friends to find hope in a new country. Experience the trauma and persecution as Anh Do, Deng Adut and Abdul share their stories of horror and joy, of laughter and pain, of wonder and resilience.
The living library is here to challenge stereotypes and World Refugee Day gives refugees a platform to feel empowered and raise awareness of their valuable contribution to society. They are here to enrich Pearl Cove and contribute to the wider community with their artistic, musical, cultural, linguistic, food and work skills.
You will leave the Living library event with greater understanding and empathy, because of the refugees who have displayed courage and perseverance to maintain their hope when they cross borders in search for a new beginning.

Our Journey Towards Home: Refugees in Conversation

Have you ever met a refugee? What would you ask them if you could?

In celebration of World Refugee Day, Pearl Cove Library will be hosting a Living Library Event where you become the 'reader' of a human 'book'. Talk with your book about their experiences and get to know members of our community!

You can choose to chat over a cup of tea and biscuits with a refugee from Syria, a refugee who is Muslim, a refugee who has lived in Australia for 30 years, a refugee who is Christian, or an Indigenous Australian from the Stolen Generation.
