Crossing borders - From fear to the land of hope

https://www.twinkl.com.au/event/refugee-week-2019

Pearl Cove Library is offering you an opportunity to come along and celebrate World Refugee Day with our Living Library. Interact with our human books where you will have a conversation that will give you an insight into the harrowing journey of refugees who have fled their home, family and friends to find hope in a new country. Experience the trauma and persecution as Anh Do, Deng Adut and Abdul share their stories of horror and joy, of laughter and pain, of wonder and resilience.
The living library is here to challenge stereotypes and World Refugee Day gives refugees a platform to feel empowered and raise awareness of their valuable contribution to society. They are here to enrich Pearl Cove and contribute to the wider community with their artistic, musical, cultural, linguistic, food and work skills.
You will leave the Living library event with greater understanding and empathy, because of the refugees who have displayed courage and perseverance to maintain their hope when they cross borders in search for a new beginning.

"Don't judge a book by its cover..."

HARMONY DAY FEST

On the 21st March every year Australia commemorates Harmony day, a time where we celebrate our cultural diversity through inclusion and respect. The ongoing theme of Harmony day is Everyone belongs, and at Pearl Cove library we aim to promote and celebrate that message too.

This year, Pearl Cove library will be hosting Harmony Day Fest, featuring our human library: Dont judge a book by its cover…

This is a free event and the community is invited to come along and celebrate together. There will be food, entertainment and a chance to browse and borrow from our
multicultural-themed human library.

A Human Library (or a Living library) is a library that allows you to borrow andreadreal people. Human books share their story or experiences through engagement and discussion with thereaderin the hope that it may tackle fear and perceptions, thus breaking down stereotypes or prejudices, and encouraging greater understanding, tolerance or even celebration of diversity in our society.

Our books include a refugee, a Muslim woman, a member of the stolen generation and a holocaust survivor. Due to the nature of the books stories, this event is only open to ages 17 years and over.

You are encouraged to wear orange, the official colour of Harmony Day, to show your support for our rich and diverse community. This is a no-alcohol event.

....So come along and Browse, Borrow, Break down barriers & Belong.
