This event is to honour artists and musicians who have disabilities. This event will incorporate a Human library, this is where you can ‘borrow one’ of the participants (called a human book) for a conversation and ask them any questions you have on your mind. We will also have art demonstrations and musical performances by our guests. The guests include:

  • Ana Maria Belo, a musical actor.
  • Catherine Senior, an artist with cerebral palsy from the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists Pty Ltd.
  • Corey Stewart, a disabled Indigenous painter sculptor and illustrator.
  • Emma Bennison, blind singer-songwriter (CEO of Arts Access Australia).

Refreshments will be provided during the event.

People with disabilities are encouraged to come along.

There are wheelchair access facilities available.

Join us at the Pearl Room as we facilitate a "Living Library" to demystify and educate
our community on the reality of a life with AIDS and what that means in today's world.
Instead of borrowing a physical book, come and "borrow" on of our real life books,
and ask questions you may not have had the opportunity of doing so before.

The following "books" will be available for loan on the evening:

An Indigenous person with a HIV positive diagnosis.
A female carer (past or present) of those with AIDS.
A Senior Citizen who has lost their friendship circle/family to AIDS.
A person from the Australian Federation of AIDS organisations.

Stay alive! - Build your inner warrior!

Support suicide awareness and prevention by joining our event on September 10, 2019!

Pearl Cove library will transform into Human Library on the World Suicide Prevention Day - September 10, 2019 to promote understanding of suicide prevention among community.

Human Library is where you can “borrow” a person and “read” as a “book”. Readers can listen to our books’ stories and have a meaningful conversation up to half an hour.

Our books are on the shelf and free to book:

Books Images
  • An Indigenous Australian doctor: A psychiatrist will talk about suicide with a focus on help-seeking and explain how to help someone with suicidal thoughts.
  • A mom who lost her son to suicide sharing her experience.
  • An unemployed person who made an attempt on his life talking about his depression.
  • A single mom talking how she was struggling with her life and had thought of suicide.
Go to Pearl Cove Library and read about this difficult topic. You can learn from our books’ experience and play an important role in suicide prevention. Spread inspirational messages and hope!

Tea and biscuits are provided so you can enjoy a pleasant reading time.

Scan the QR code to reserve a book, or make your booking through Eventbrite.

Please let us know in the registration form if you have any accessibility and/or dietary requirements so we can make an appropriate arrangement.

At Pearl Cove Library, our members love to read: to learn, understand and engage with the books in our collection. We’re staying true to that idea with our monthly Living Library events, except the "books" just happen to be real people, thoughtfully sharing their insights, experiences and perspectives with "readers".

During March, in recognition of Harmony Week and the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the theme of Pearl Cove's Living Library will be Everyone Belongs. This theme embraces Pearl Cove’s cultural and religious diversity, inclusive of First Nations peoples and multicultural migrant heritage.

Check your preconceptions! Have a conversation with someone you think you know. Willing to share their stories with readers, 12 living books will be available to book for sessions of 20 minutes. Join us at this special event where you borrow a person instead of a book. Bookings essential.

Book titles include:
  • One of the stolen generations
  • Community elder
  • First Nations young person… and proud
  • New arrival: a recent migrant
  • Overseas-born Australian
  • First-generation Australian
  • Seeking asylum 1970s: Vietnamese
  • Seeking asylum 2000s: Sudanese
  • Hijabi Muslim
  • Hindu
  • Jewish community member
