REFUGEE WEEK- HUMAN LIBRARY EVENT - JUNE 19

In recognition of Refugee Week in June, we have invited a group of newly arrived people to talk about their experiences of living in Pearl Cove at a Human Living Library event.

What is a Human Library?

It operates the same as an everyday library,
except people are borrowed rather than books.
You can borrow a person for 20 minutes and have a conversation with them on why you like living in Pearl Cove.

Did you know?

Most people seeking asylum in Australia arrive by air?*

A refugee is a person who is forced to leave their home. At the end of 2017 there were 68.5 million people who were forcibly removed from their homes. This event hopes to address stereotypes and myths about refugees and fully support them into our Pearl Cove community.

Have you ever seen someone living rough on the streets and wondered how they came to be in such a situation?

Do you wonder where they get food from and do they reach out to organisations for help, a place to shower or get a hot meal?

What is it?

The new event coming to Pearl Cove Library, Men's Mental Health is focused on a topic that is often neglected in today's society. We've partnered with Human Living Libraries to bring in those who have dealt with issues such as depression, suicide, and more to help you deal with them as well.

Don't hesitate to come!

Whether you're the one dealing with these issues or a friend, don't feel afraid to give this event a try. No one will judge you, and we're all here to help. You don't have to feel left behind, or let your emotions and issues stew. Listen to others, and come out of it ready to tackle any problems you face!

Our "Books"

1. Minjarra, an Aboriginal advocate who has experience dealing with issues such as depression.

2. Bill, a speaker from BeyondBlue who has helped many people of all ages with mental health issues.

Celebrating International Day of People with Disability in December 2019, Pearl Cove Library will host a Human Living Library” event on the 3 December 2019. This is where you can “borrow” a person, rather than borrow a book.

This event will give opportunity for people to have a conversation with people who have disability and gain a better understanding about disability. This will help motivate people with disability and give inspiration for people who are unemployed to find work and have confidence in applying for jobs or pursue new careers.

Library-goers can register to be 'readers' and borrow one or more living books for up to half an hour and have a chat over a cup of coffee with our human living libraries.
