Help Pearl Cove SPEAK OUT against abuse

For National Psychology Week, the Pearl Cove Library Service and Coveside Psychology Clinic have partnered to host a Human Living Library event: 'Speak Out Against Abuse.'

What is a Human Library?

Human Living Libraries provide a safe and conversational space where people can discuss topics that may be outside the scope of their everyday lives. In these libraries, people take on the role of speaking 'books' who act as sources of information, sharing their unique lived experiences and perspectives,

Please come join us on Sunday 17th November 2019 at Pearl Cove Library to hear from four living 'books' with expertise and experience regarding family conflict, elder abuse, the psychological effects of abuse, and the formal processes surrounding this issues.

Adoption Awareness Week

Pearl Cove Living Library

ADOPTION AWARENESS WEEK

A home for every child

The statistics are staggering! There are almost 18 million orphan children in the world and Australia alone has almost 40,000 children in need of a permanent home. Sadly in 2017, only 315 children were adopted in Australia. Every child deserves the opportunity to wake up every morning in a safe and loving home, but many children will never get that opportunity.

Legally, it's a complicated and often costly process, and this is a huge concern even for families who would love to adopt a child. Finding the required information surrounding the adoption process and understanding the best ways to navigate the system can be very difficult.

In order to help people understand not only the process of adopting but the result - both legally and emotionally - Pearl Cove Library will give you the opportunity to talk to those who have lived through or have been closely affected by this experience through our

"Human Libraries Event"

A huge range of 'living books' will be available to answer your hard questions. This include
adopted children... now adults, adoptive parents and birth parents, a parent and a child who were affected by the Stolen Generation, prospective adoptive parents currently going through the process, social workers, psychologists and adoption agencies.

Guest speaker Deborra-lee Furness from Adopt Change will talk about the issues and barriers surrounding adoption in Australia, both domestic and intercountry, the importance of permanency in a child's life and how critical it is to his or her development and life prospects.

Our hope is to help bring some clarity into the issue and continue the conversation by letting you step into the lives and minds of those who have lived through this experience.

Come and join us in this new and interactive storytelling space.
